Review: Watching Edie by Camilla Way

Watching Edie
Beautiful, creative, a little wild… Edie was the kind of girl who immediately caused a stir when she walked into your life. And she had dreams back then—but it didn’t take long for her to learn that things don’t always turn out the way you want them to.
Now, at thirty-three, Edie is working as a waitress, pregnant and alone. And when she becomes overwhelmed by the needs of her new baby and sinks into a bleak despair, she thinks that there’s no one to turn to…
But someone’s been watching Edie, waiting for the chance to prove once again what a perfect friend she can be. It’s no coincidence that Heather shows up on Edie’s doorstep, just when Edie needs her the most. So much has passed between them—so much envy, longing, and betrayal. And Edie’s about to learn a new lesson: those who have hurt us deeply—or who we have hurt—never let us go, not entirely…

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

This was one of those books that had me intrigued from the very beginning but my reading schedule meant I wasn't able to read it straight away, so it has sat on my shelf quietly calling to me. Once I was able to get started on this book I did not want to put it down.

This isnt really one story, its two, and both stories unfold one chapter at a time.
In the Before chapters we get to meet a young Edie and Heather, just as they are first meeting, we get to see their relationship and how it develops. We also learn the secret as to what caused Edie to flee from her home and start anew in London.
In the After chapters we realise that Edie may have moved, but she has been unable to move on. She's expecting a child and has no-one to lean on... which coincides with Heather re-appearing in her life.

I'll be honest, I was sure I knew how this story was going to go down. I was wrong. I was so wrong. On more than one occasion. Way has done a fabulous job of weaving her tale, and offering up twists a-plenty to keep the reader gripped until the very last pages.
