Review: Desolation by Derek Landy

Desolation (Demon Road, #2)
THE EPIC NEW THRILLER CONTINUES.
The second book in the mind-blowing new supernatural thriller from bestselling author DEREK LANDY, creator of international sensation Skulduggery Pleasant.
Reeling from their bloody encounter in New York City, Amber and Milo flee north. On their trail are the Hounds of Hell – five demonic bikers who will stop at nothing to drag their quarries back to their unholy master.
Amber and Milo’s only hope lies within Desolation Hill – a small town with a big secret; a town with a darkness to it, where evil seeps through the very floorboards. Until, on one night every year, it spills over onto the streets and all hell breaks loose.
And that night is coming.

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

So we meet up with Amber just a short while after the events of Demon Road, there's no mention of how much time has passed but there is talk later of it being a few weeks?
This story is told a little differently than the first, in the first book there was a lot of moving around and various new people and different adventures to deal with, whereas this one is one big adventure (with a small but memorable scene before they reach Desolation Hill). We also get a couple of extra POV's in this book, all from secondary characters (though not Milo) who are new to the story.
Whilst I will admit that new POV chapters in the beginning caught me off guard making the beginning of the book feel a little awkward I soon came to terms with the new people and settled down to read this in just two sittings.

One off the things that has bothered me about Amber is her self loathing. She hates her human appearance, and that image of her isn't helped by the fact that almost everyone she meets thinks her Demon self is more attractive. So there was a bit of a fist pump moment when Kelly sees Amber's demon side for the first time and voices her preference for her human side.. I'm really hoping that Amber learns to love herself, her whole self in the third and final instalment in this series, I get that she's sixteen and that most sixteen year old girls judge their self worth on how others treat them, and Amber has had a shitty deal with that until now, but I'm hoping that with all she has gone through, and hints of what is still to come that she will actually realise she's bad ass and worth it.

This has been a fantastic follow on from Demon Road, as Amber and Milo travel the demon road their story just gets darker and darker... I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one ends.
