I'm really not sure where to begin with this one so bear with my while I try and sort through the ramblings in my head.

Now obviously I was told this was a short novella but I wasn't prepared for just how short it actually was.. or perhaps that speaks volumes for Purdy's work in that I sat down to read this and before I knew it I had devoured it. All of it. In one sitting.

From the first chapter I was hooked. I wanted to know more about this little girl, find out her story, who she was and what she would grow up to be... and in the end I didn't get all my answers. I would love to see more of Ruby, to learn about her powers. To see the queen she will become. 

I'll be honest and admit I was a little uncomfortable with Matthias' parentage.. whilst reading his backstory my brain instantly flew to several other works that had a similar character (trying really hard not to include a spoiler here) Which meant that yes I had to re-read a few sections twice because my mind had drifted and pulled me away from this story. However it didn't take much to get back on track and it was overall just a small bump in the road.

It doesn't matter how many of her books I read I'm always amazed at how easy it is to slip into Purdy's stories and this one was no exception.

Author Biography:

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing fantasy novels for children and young adults. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also entertained her creative writing group and baffled her tutors by submitting strange fantasy tales featuring dragons and supernatural monsters to workshops. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma refuses to settle down and be normal. When not embarking on wild excursions, she edits and proofreads novels for various publishing houses and reads an insane number of books. At the age of 21, she signed a publishing contract with Curiosity Quills Press for the first book in her creepy urban fantasy Darkworld series. DARKNESS WATCHING was published in October 2013, and four more novels and a novella will follow. Garrett arrived home. It was almost ten o’clock. Her car was outside but the house was quiet. He wondered where she was. He’d missed her. After taking Patches out for the last time that night, he went upstairs to shower. It had been a long day and he wanted to relax. Heading down the hallway with Patches at his heels, the distinct sounds of water running reached him. It was coming from the direction of his master bath. He quickened his pace. Reaching the bedroom, he looked at Patches, who had followed. “Sorry, boy, not tonight.” He closed the door between them.

She was home and in his shower. When he reached the bathroom, he could see her behind the glass doors. Stripping his own clothes quickly, he grabbed the knob to join her. Opening the shower door, surprised elation and desire swept through him.

Chloe was holding her breasts with one hand while touching herself with the other hand, obviously bringing herself to completion. The sight of finding her pleasing herself made him grow hard instantly.

Startled at the sound of the door opening, she dropped her hands, self-conscious at having Garrett find her in a private moment.

Chloe trembled with nervousness at the thought of what he was asking of her. She had never satisfied herself in front of a lover before, not that she’d had that many, only Trevor and now Garrett. She released a nervous breath. She wasn’t sure she could go through with it. Looking into his eyes, which were smoldering with desire, she felt compelled to try.

Setting the condom down on the shelf, Garrett took her other hand and placed it over her mound. His gaze held hers while he began to move her hand through her folds with his hand on top. He pulls me toward him and burns me to my center with a kiss, one with such intense heat I’m surprised it doesn’t disintegrate my clothes. I reach for the button on his pants. “No.” He grabs my hands and looks at me. “Yes,” I say. “No.” He stands and pushes me off his lap. “Come on. I’ll take you home.” He grabs my hand and pulls me toward his truck. “Hank,” I cry with frustration and tug my hand back. He turns to face me and throws his hands in the air. “What do you want from me? Sex? We can’t even go on a simple date. Jeez, I can’t believe I’m saying this.” He runs his hand through his hair before stuffing it in his pocket. “Maybe we could try another date,” I suggest. My heart flutters with the anticipation of a second date. The weight of time hangs between us as I wait for him to decide if he wants to be with me again. “You know, I’ve heard of worse ideas,” he answers. He links his fingers with mine and walks me to his truck.
