The Almost Girl Review

The Almost Girl by Amalie Howard

The Almost GirlSeventeen-year-old Riven is as tough as they come. Coming from a world ravaged by a devastating android war, she has to be. There’s no room for softness, no room for emotion, no room for mistakes. A Legion General, she is the right hand of the young Prince of Neospes, a parallel universe to Earth. In Neospes, she has everything: rank, responsibility and respect. But when Prince Cale sends her away to find his long-lost brother, Caden, who has been spirited back to modern day Earth, Riven finds herself in uncharted territory.
Thrown out of her comfort zone but with the mindset of a soldier, Riven has to learn how to be a girl in a realm that is the opposite of what she knows. Riven isn’t prepared for the beauty of a world that is unlike her own in so many ways. Nor is she prepared to feel something more than indifference for the very target she seeks. Caden is nothing like Cale, but he makes something in her come alive, igniting a spark deep down that goes against every cell in her body. For the first time in her life, Riven isn’t sure about her purpose, about her calling. Torn between duty and desire, she must decide whether Caden is simply a target or whether he is something more.
Faced with hideous reanimated Vector soldiers from her own world with agendas of their own, as well as an unexpected reunion with a sister who despises her, it is a race against time to bring Caden back to Neospes. But things aren’t always as they seem, and Riven will have to search for truth. Family betrayals and royal coups are only the tip of the iceberg. Will Riven be able to find the strength to defy her very nature? Or will she become the monstrous soldier she was designed to be?

Title: Embracing Death

Series: The Death Trilogy #2
Genre: Erotic Paranormal Romance
Expected publication: December 12, 2013 by Dragonfairy Press

Blurb:

All of Samantha Bevan’s memories have been returned to her. But instead of bringing her peace, they’ve only brought her more turmoil. She now recalls the dark addiction to feeling other people’s deaths and every day is a struggle to control her urges. At least she has Austin to help her… or does she? Samantha will discover that even with her memories, she doesn’t know the truth of her past, and those secrets may prove detrimental to her and everyone she loves. Will she be able to unravel the mystery of who’s been pulling her strings before it’s too late? Or will Austin be the one to suffer from her mistakes?

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

I honestly don't know where to start with this one. That I loved it is not the question here, its how do I articulate it that is the problem.

I love easy reads, books that you can just slip into with no effort required and for the most part this is what Dyllin brings to Sam's story. Because it IS easy to slip into Sam's head and be taken along for the ride. But don't think that this book requires no effort to read it, the story itself is not something you can just cruise through. This book demands to be read properly. You NEED to give it your 100% or you my friend will end up lost and confused. This book has you second guessing everyone. It's been a while since I read Feeling Death, so when I first started reading this I was a little confused as I had forgotten little snippets of information, but there are snippets of information that jog your memory and it's not long before you're back up to speed.

I love the relationship between Sam and Austin. I love that it is twisted in way that is hard for outsiders to understand, but is nonetheless oh so very beautiful. And the sexually chemistry between them is through the roof. So much so that thanks to their growing powers they don't even have to be in the same room as each other to get the other one hot.

Like Feeling Death, Embracing Death is not told in a straight line. I mean we do have a beginning, a middle and an end. But we also have many flashbacks. Flashbacks from the first book and flashbacks from Sam's earlier memories. Some of which give you an 'OMG really? Now that makes sense' moment. And it makes you realise that people have been meddling for much longer than you originally think. What this means for me, is I am now chomping at the bit waiting for the final instalment in the Death Trilogy. Because if the first two books are anything to go by, it promises to be Epic. No pressure or anything ;-)

About the Author

This Child of Mine Reviews and Interview

This Child of MineThis Child of Mine by Sinéad Moriarty
Book Synopsis
Anna and Laura, Sophie and Mandy - two mothers, two daughters and a story about the bond of motherly love.

Anna is proud of the job she has done raising eighteen-year-old Sophie. It's always been just the two of them, but that doesn't matter because Sophie has everything she could ever need.

It's a miracle that Laura's daughter Mandy is as happy as she is, considering that Laura remains haunted by the loss of her first child before Mandy was born.

Both women carry painful secrets and can never forget the day their paths crossed. But a chance discovery is about to bring everything into the open, and mothers and daughters, love and lies, past and future, will spectacularly collide . .

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

In the beginning of the book I was fairly sympathetic to both Anna and Laura, these women are complete opposites...
Anna is approaching her 40's and has spent so long trying to have a baby and living through the heartache of multiple miscarriages, the loss of her mother and the end of her marriage, she suffers immeasurably. It's easy to feel sorry for her, have your heart break for her loss and pain.
Laura is 19, still reeling from the death of her father and as a result she loses her way. She loses herself in drinking and finds herself pregnant with no father in the picture. She makes the decision to have a termination, but her mother insists she have the baby. Laura feels trapped, forced to raise a child she hadn't planned, cut off from her friends and the live she thinks she should be living. While I may not have made the same choices as she did I found it easy to sympathise with Laura.

Once you start reading the book you realise very quickly the direction the book is going to take. And it was at this point that my sympathy for Anna disappeared, and despite the fact that I had on more than one occasion wanted to slap Laura (yes I was sympathetic to her, doesn't mean I agreed with all her choices) my heart broke completely for her for the first time in this book. As the story progressed I found myself getting increasingly angrier towards Anna. There's no denying that Laura was a terrible mum, and I myself have said in the past that people like that do not deserve to have children, but to do what Anna did was so beyond wrong. Throughout the book I continued to think 'it's no less than what you deserve'. Though I did soften towards her a little nearer the end.

While I may not have liked all of the characters all of the time, they felt real. They were well written, even the secondary characters. Moriarty has given us a well written story that doesn't feel all fluffy, this book is a train wreck of emotions. I myself was in tears on more than one occasion. This was in fact my first Moriarty book and I look forward to reading more of her work

Lisa's review - 5 out of 5 stars

I have never read a book by Sinead Moriarty before, but after This Child Of Mine, I'll definitely be checking out some more!

This Child of Mine is a story about two mothers, two daughters and the collision of their lives.
Anna, a middle aged woman who longs for a child but suffered multiple miscarriages, and the tragic death of her new born daughter. She gives up everything in her life to start a completely fresh life in London.
Laura, a teenage girl who spirals out of control after the death of her father. She then faces life as a single mum when she finds herself pregnant, and having to raise a daughter she didn't want.

I loved the backstory that started this book off, the schoolchildren that Anna taught had me in laughter even though I should have been horrified! Going through the lives of two very different women and eventually seeing them come to deal with the consequences of decisions, right and wrong, earlier in their lives was so well written, it was very realistic. This book isn't just a happy ever after chick lit book, it is hard hitting, realistic, and emotional read.

There were parts of this book that made me laugh, some made me cry, and some made me angry. The actions of Anna were enough to make my blood boil and I found it very hard to be sympathetic towards her. In the end the only reason I did even a little bit was down to Sophie. Up until Anna made the life changing decision she did, she was the character getting all of my sympathy, while I found myself really disliking Laura early on. But it was a great turn in the story and some really well written work that flipped my opinion on the characters completely.

My only complaint about this story was about Sophie. I know she was brought up in a very strict, and almost wrapped-in-cotton-wool life, but I found it pretty hard to believe that any 19 year old girl can be quite that 'good'. There were points in the story, especially when 16 year old Mandy was introduced, that I struggled and forgot that there was almost a 3 year age gap between the two girls, and that Sophie was the older one.

There were a couple of the secondary characters that I adored, and I kind of wished they had their own, separate story because they were funny, real, and just great to read. It seems that if I could sum this book up in one word, it would be realistic, as I just think that it wasn't like reading a girly book, it was almost like reading the memoirs of three women who actually existed.

Hello Sinéad and welcome to Booky Ramblings of a Neurotic Mom
What inspired you to write your first book?
My first book was inspired by my real life struggle to get pregnant. The Baby Trail is a bitter-sweet comedy based around a couple trying to have their first baby.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I write as I think. It’s very important not to try to imitate anyone else and trust your own voice.

How did you come up with the title?
I have my editor to thank for that.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I really just want the novel to make people pause and think. It’s really about the moral dilemma of ‘would you take a child if you thought its life was in danger’

How much of the book is based on your life experiences?
Thankfully I have no experience of this kind of thing but I have always been fascinated about the Nature versus Nurture debate.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
As I mentioned, my first novel was inspired by events in my own life, but since then I have written about a range of issues that I don’t have personal experience of but that I feel passionately about.

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most?
I think the first one. I got so much out and had so much fun writing it that I think it was very cathartic. I went on to have three children of my own and I always think that writing The Baby Trail brought me luck.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I am in awe of any writer who manages to finish a book. It is a lot harder than it looks.

What book are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and thoroughly enjoying it.

What are your current projects?
I am finishing up my tenth novel and then I hope to write a play before starting my eleventh novel.

Do you see your writing as a career?
Absolutely! I hope to write until I’m old and grey.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
A writer is never finished editing. There are always things you would change but you have to let it go.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
My mother is a writer of children’s books and she was my inspiration growing up.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
My current book is about three sisters who are all going through very modern day problems. It’s a funny and moving story about modern life and all of its trials and tribulations

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
I find the middle section of a book difficult. It’s challenging to keep up the momentum at that point but maintaining pace throughout a book is so important.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
A little but it’s always fun

Who designs your cover(s)?
Penguin, my publishers

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to inject humour into the book but I feel I did manage to in the end.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep at it. Don’t let the knock backs stop you. Believe in yourself.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Thank you for reading and making it possible for me to continue creating stories which is my absolute passion in life.

S.E.C.R.E.T. Review

S.E.C.R.E.T. (Secret, #1)S.E.C.R.E.T. by L. Marie Adeline

Book Synopsis

Cassie Robichaud’s life is filled with regret and loneliness after the sudden death of her husband. She waits tables at the rundown Café Rose in New Orleans, and every night she heads home to her solitary one-bedroom apartment. But when she discovers a notebook left behind by a mysterious woman at the café, Cassie’s world is forever changed.

The notebook’s stunningly explicit confessions shock and fascinate Cassie, and eventually lead her to S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T, an underground society dedicated to helping women realize their wildest, most intimate sexual fantasies. Cassie soon immerses herself in an electrifying journey through a series of ten rapturous fantasies with gorgeous men who awaken and satisfy her like never before. As she is set free from her inhibitions, she discovers a new confidence that transforms her, giving her the courage to live passionately. Equal parts enticing, liberating and emotionally powerful, S∙E∙C∙R∙E∙T is a world where fantasy becomes reality.

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

I read this book in one sitting. Start to finish, one sitting. I didn't get up for anything until this book was done.
I actually thought the book was more or less going to be Cassie reading the diary she had found and find 'herself sexually' by living vicariously through the diary. So I was really surprised and happy when actually Cassie got to find out about S.E.C.R.E.T. all by herself.

I had hoped for slightly longer fantasy scenes, they all seemed shorter than they could/should have been, the book would definitely have been much better if they had, but ultimately I was still able to enjoy it. I did see on Goodreads that this was the first book in the Secret series and about half way  through I 'saw' the HEA coming and I groaned because honestly I didn't know if i'd want to read someone else's journey into Secret in the same way we had with Cassie... but then things happened and I have to say I was happier with this hiccup in Cassies path and I'm now keen to find out what happens next.

Black Friday Extravaganza

*New Adult Paranormal Romance*

In the city that never sleeps the Chronicles continue…

Serving coffee is temporary, just like Casey's year off from school. She’s going to come up with a plan to stay in New York City and go back to college, and that plan does not involve dating a paranormal creature—let alone two.

Running the supernatural society of New York is not as fun as it sounds, especially when you still have to answer to your ex-girlfriend’s fiancé. Toby doesn’t mean to bring Casey into the chaos of his life, but he can't resist the girl who makes him smile when he thought no one else ever could.

Jared's in New York checking out a security risk for his best friend, the king. He plans to return to New Orleans quickly, but not if it means losing his chance with the brunette who pretends she wants nothing to do with him.

In over her head with a bunch of winged creatures who most definitely are not angels, Casey has to figure out who to trust with her life and maybe her heart.

Ending ELE

Ending ELE (ELE, #5)Ending ELE by Rebecca Gober and Courtney Nuckels

Book Synopsis

"Sometimes, I feel as if loving you is the single greatest and scariest thing I’ve ever done.” ~Tony (Ending ELE)

The government took her people and now they are looking for her too. Running seems to be all that Willow and her friends do these days. Not only must Willow stay out of the reach of the soldiers who took her friends, but now she finds herself hunted by a more sinister threat. An evil group of men that are looking to finish what Hastings' had started.

This time Willow's friends won't let her run off to be the sacrificial hero, especially not the man who loves her. Will Willow and her friends find a way to save her people and take down the bad guys once and for all? And in the end, can Willow and Tony find their happily ever after in a post Project ELE world?

From the authors of Project ELE comes ENDING ELE. The fifth book in an all-new apocalyptic series with a paranormal twist: The ELE Series

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

It seems like a life time ago that I started reading the ELE series, in fact it's been a little over 13 months since I finished reading Project ELE and was on the verge of stalking the authors to find out when I could get my hands on the next instalment. No restraining orders where needed but I did stalk Gober and Nuckels just a little and joined their street team so that I could get sneak peeks into Willow's world before everyone else. It has been 13 months since my ELE journey started and the ending was highly anticipated. And I can honestly say it did not disappoint.

Giber and Nuckels have done a wonderful job of tying up all the loose ends. We find out just how deep Dr Hastings deception goes. Willow gets the closure she needs after the death of her mother and we find out why Project ELE didn't work the way it was supposed to. We get the action, the laughs, the tears. Oh the tears. And we get the Happy ending that we all hoped would be coming.

One of the things that I truly enjoyed about this series was the young adult aspect. Throughout the series Willow is running for her life and being chased by the bad guys, without being overly graphic, we get to experience the fear that Willow must be facing. We also get to experience her first love with Alex and then her deeper love with Tony, but it's all kept completely clean and innocent. I have no problems sharing this series with my 10 year old daughter. I'm pretty sure that Willow's story will be right up her street. And this is something else that I love about this series, it might be suitable for 10 year olds, but its also highly engaging for the more *ahem* mature audience.

Crash Into You ARC review

Crash into You (Pushing the Limits, #3)Crash into You by Katie McGarry

Book Synopsis

From acclaimed author Katie McGarry comes an explosive new tale of a good girl with a reckless streak, a street-smart guy with nothing to lose, and a romance forged in the fast lane

The girl with straight As, designer clothes and the perfect life - that's who people expect Rachel Young to be. So the private-school junior keeps secrets from her wealthy parents and overbearing brothers...and she's just added two more to the list. One involves racing strangers down dark country roads in her Mustang GT. The other? Seventeen-year-old Isaiah Walker-a guy she has no business even talking to. But when the foster kid with the tattoos and intense gray eyes comes to her rescue, she can't get him out of her mind.

Isaiah has secrets, too. About where he lives, and how he really feels about Rachel. The last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a rich girl who wants to slum it on the south side for kicks-no matter how angelic she might look.

But when their shared love of street racing puts both their lives in jeopardy, they have six weeks to come up with a way out. Six weeks to discover just how far they'll go to save each other.

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

Let me just start by saying.. while it states up there in the blurb that this is "an explosive new tale" this is actually the third book in the Pushing The Limits series. Something I didn't realise until I moved this book to my currently reading shelf on Goodreads. I must have confused this one with a book from a different series because I was ecstatic when I received the email inviting me to request it on NetGalley, and was more than a little disappointed when I realised that I hadn't actually read the first books in the series. But here's the thing, it's the third book in this series and at the time of typing this up I'm over half way through the story and I haven't felt like anything is missing, I don't feel like I have missed important facts about either of the main characters and I am fully able to enjoy the story. So while it may be the third book in a series, and while it may read better having read the first two books I can assure you that you do not need to have read the first two books before reading this one.

This is my first Katie McGarry book and as such I had no idea what to expect. The synopsis of the book did draw me in and I can honestly say there was no part of the book that made me wish I had picked up something else instead. I loved the switching of POV from Isaiah and Rachel, sometimes when the story is told from only one persons perspective you can have a whole lot of story that doesn't get told.

From the very first page I was drawn to Isaiah, I
wantedneeded to know more about him. But for me the real draw of this book was Rachel. My heart broke for her on more than one occasion. Here we have a young girl who is terrified of living her life the way she wants to because her entire family depend on her to keep the family happy. She has so much pressure forced on to her from every single member of her family it's no wonder she suffers from panic attacks. The personal growth that this character goes through is amazing, but it's not all magic and sunshine, it doesn't happen overnight just because a boy likes her. McGarry has done a wonderful job in helping Rachel conquer her fears, claim her life, set her family free AND get the boy without making her come across as a real Mary Sue type.

I now need to run off and find the first two books in this series so I can get caught up.

Olivia doesn't expect it to be easy, even with the PSS guys backing them up. But what she discovers over the course of the mission will call into question everything she ever believed about herself, her family, and especially about Marcus, the guy she is undoubtedly falling in love with.

What does Olivia like to do in her spare time?
Read, explore the woods and gullies around Greenfield, think morbid or snarky thoughts, glance at Marcus. She also does art, not painting but dark, brooding collages out of random things she finds lying around.

How did your interest in reading and writing start?
I've loved to read for as long as I can remember. I read everything, science fiction and fantasy especially, and I can remember reading the encyclopedia set we had and almost every entry would give me an idea for a story. But I didn't really write anything significant until I was in eighth grade when my mom was terminally ill with cancer. I wrote my first poem about her impending death titled "When We Fly." I also wrote a science fiction short story for my English teacher about the sun suddenly getting too close to the earth, and she loved it, and a writer was born.

Are there things you have in common with your main character Olivia or any of the other characters?
Well, Olivia and I are both introverts. I have somewhat of a fascination with death and I happen to love cemeteries and hate doctors. I once had a picnic on a sarcophagus in my favorite cemetery for a first date. Obviously, Olivia and I have also both lost a parent to cancer. And I have something in common with Passion. I too was raised in a Christian home, though my parents were wonderful.

The books in the PSS Chronicles series are Paranormal Thrillers, what in this genre appeals to you and why did you decide to write this genre?
Well, first, I write genre YA because I love to read it. A writer should always write something they want to read. Plus, I have two teenagers so they help me keep the work current and enjoy the finished product. And as much as Paranormal Romance has been the go-to young adult genre recently, I don't find romance as compelling as action, adventure, or intrigue. Romance is fairly predictable. Either they end up together, or they don't. Including the thriller element in my books allows me to turn and twist the plot a lot more, which I find challenging and interesting. And of course, there can still be some romance to sweeten the pot.

How did you come up with the inspiration for the PSS Chronicles series?
The main idea for PSS or Psyche Sans Soma, the birth defect that Olivia Black and other characters in the series suffer from, came from the real medical phenomenon of phantom limbs. I have a friend who is an amputee. Even though his right leg is gone, he can still feel it. He can feel the grass between his toes when he walks in the back yard. He can get a cramp in the middle of the night in the leg he no longer has. And this is true even of people who aren't amputees but were born without certain limbs. It seems our brain has a map of our body that isn’t limited to its fleshly manifestation. So, for the PSS series, I took that idea and ran with it. I asked myself, "What if those phantom limbs actually existed? What would they look, and act, and feel like? How would society react to them? And what power would they hold?'

What was the inspiration for Olivia?
Olivia is a combo of my inner Goth, my daughter, and the self I wish I'd been brave enough to be as a teenager.

How many books will the PSS Chronicles series contain?
Three or Four. I'm not sure yet. I have to see how long book three is first, and find out what happens.

Who designed the covers for your books and how went the process of developing them?
Kura Carpenter of Kura Carpenter Designs did Ghost Hand. I was really happy with her work and it ended up almost exactly as I'd envisioned it. I have a very personal connection to my covers. I often get visions of them in my head while I'm writing the book and that vision may even influence what I write or how things happen in the book. Because of that, I love and need to be involved in the process of cover design.

As much as I loved Kura's work for Ghost Hand, I decided to use Scarlett Rugers for the Ghost Hold design. Of course, I wanted it to match the first book while being its own unique thing. I think she did an amazing job with that. And I love the cover we ended up with. Just an interesting tid-bit, the cover for Ghost Hold was actually designed well before I wrote the end of the book and it certainly influenced the mood and details the reader encounters in the Eidolon scenes.

Which scenes do you find the easiest to write?
Whenever Olivia is being snarky, I find it almost too easy to write. My kids and betas help me cut back on some of that. They help me keep Olivia likeable. I guess I'm full of a lot of natural snark and Olivia is my mouth-piece for it.

Which scenes do you find most difficult to write?
The romance and the violence. In Ghost Hand there is actually a chapter titled "Blood and Romance" and it was really hard to write. For me, I hate for romance to be too sappy or cheesy, but I like real, sweet, genuine moments, so I'm always pulling back and making sure that's what I have. In books, romance is often written in a very formulaic way that we all know doesn't actually happen. And it can be hard not to fall into that pattern, but one of my recent reviewers said the relationship between Marcus and Olivia was one of the most naturally developing teen romances she'd ever read. I felt very proud of that.

As far as the violence, it is just hard to put the characters I love through some of the stuff they have to experience. Sometimes, I just don't want to do it and so my inner muse goes on strike. When that happens, I just give myself space from the book and remember that trouble builds character- literally.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to read, of course, especially YA. I like to hang out with other writers and bookish nerds. I love to hike and garden and generally spend time in nature or with my pets. And I love to travel when I have the money.
