Ground Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse and Guest Post

Ground Zero: A Zombie ApocalypseGround Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse by Nicholas Ryan

Book Synopsis

“This is exactly the kind of intelligent, action-packed zombie thriller that fans of DJ Molles and Max Brooks will love!”
- ZombieBookBlog

Aboard a freighter bound for Baltimore harbor, an Iranian terrorist prepares to unleash an unimaginable horror upon the United States. The ‘Wrath’ is an undead plague – an infection that consumes its victims with a maddening rage and turns them into mindless blood-thirsty killers.
Jack Cutter is just an ordinary guy dealing with a dreadful guilt when the virus tears through his home town. Before it’s too late, Cutter will have to find a way to survive, and find a reason fight:
HIS REDEMPTION.

The Secret to Great Horror

In my opinion the secret to writing great horror scenes is to make the action and situations as realistic as possible and to create characters that are relatable to the reader.

When I wrote ‘Ground Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse, I deliberately created the Jack Cutter character to be an every-day guy with a skill set that most people could relate to. Cutter doesn’t have special skills – he’s just an ordinary guy thrown into an extraordinary situation. I know a lot of other zombie novels have lead characters who can all boast an extensive set of military skills to fall back on, but how many readers could directly relate to a character like that?

The real problem with ‘Ground Zero: A Zombie Apocalypse’ was to create horror scenes that were realistic. I mean, zombies don’t exist - right?

When I started writing the events that take place in the book I had to find ways to make the horror scenes compelling enough that a reader would want to come along for the ride and remain immersed in the events to momentarily suspend their disbelief. It is why I drew on everyday vermin such as rats and scavenger crows to give those zombie scenes an added touch of real life.

Bare Assets Review, Interview & Giveaway

Bare Assets By M.L. Stephens

18218664With nothing but shattered dreams and a busted heart to fuel the way, Angela Fletcher drove out of Arkansas and never looked back.

Six years later, the new and improved version of the girl she used to be steered clear of romance, love and late night promises. The only pillow talk Angela engaged in these days, was making sure the person on the other pillow knew to lose her number as soon as he left the bed. She only had room for one love in her life and that was Bare Assets, the gentleman's club she poured her heart and soul into.

Dean Murray was the devil in disguise and had left behind enough broken hearted women to populate a small country. Angela would know. She was an expert markswoman who was skillfully self-trained at shooting down the good, the bad and the ugly of all masculine targets. After all, as the owner of the most successful strip club in Dallas, Texas, it was her business to know men.

Just as she begins to fall for Dean's silky words and passionate ways, her past and present unexpectedly collide and a meticulously planned future turns into unpredictable chaos. Is the smooth talking, denim wearing devil responsible for the chaos? Or have the secrets she left buried in Arkansas, coming back to haunt her?

Claire's Review 5 of 5 Stars

Wow I absolutely loved this! I read the whole book in 1 sitting, It was such a nice smooth read and I could not put it down. Angie is a strong woman who has been to hell and back and came out stronger, but still has her softer side which is bought out when she starts letting Dean into her life and when she is confronted with her past from Cutter. This was a very emotional read for me and I found myself shedding a few tears when you discover more about Deans life.

M.L. Stephens has written an amazing story here and I cant recommend it enough.  I have also read some of her previous work and she has definitely gained a fan!

Author Interview

M.L. Stephens

6526584I'm just an every day Mrs. Joe, except that I have an unshakable fetish for a good mystery and anything paranormal, along with an insatiable appetite for coffee and travel. When I'm not reading the novels of so many great authors, I'm creating stories of my own. My family keeps me grounded, my pets keep me jumping, my friends keep me focused, and it all happens in Texas!

What inspired you to write your first book? I sat on the idea of my first book for twelve years before finally writing it. While living abroad in a desert country, I found myself sitting in an apartment for 16 hours a day without anyone to talk to. I decided then that the, "I'm too busy," excuse was no longer valid.

Do you have a specific writing style? My writing style depends upon my mood, the genre I'm writing and the characters' backgrounds.

How did you come up with the title? The Bare Assets title was a surprise. I knew I wanted a catchy name for the gentlemen's club and was stumped until I overheard someone discussing their marital assets and that's when it hit me.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? I want people to know that regardless of your background or any hopelessness in your life, it is possible to find success and love if that's what you desire.

How much of the book is realistic? I would say that most of it is. I don't personally know any strip club owners, but I do know a strip club manager who came from a small town in Arkansas and I have also known women who have danced their way through college and became successful business women.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life? I've known women who danced, but otherwise, heavens, no. Me on a stripper pole? Yeah, right. *laughs*

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most? The Perfect Clone because it was the first book I completed and caused me to realize that I could do it.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? If I had to choose, I would pick four. J.R. Ward, Heather Graham, Lisa Jackson and Sandra Brown. Not because I personally know them, but because their writing styles inspire me.

What book are you reading now? I'm currently reading Jane's Melody by Ryan Winfield.

What are your current projects? I have two projects in the works. Bare Essentials which will be a companion to Bare Assets and A Witch's Curse which takes me back to my love of the paranormal.

Do you see your writing as a career? I think that for any writer, it's more than just a career. Writing is a way of life. We eat, breathe and sleep the stories while creating them. I've been known to sit at the keyboard from 5AM - Midnight/7 days a week when I'm in a writing groove. My kids say that I'm possessed. I try to remind them that it's obsessed and not possessed. HA!

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book? I would change everything and nothing. It sounds quirky, but for each scene that's written, I think of a dozen ways that it could be rewritten to create a different outcome. If I didn't commit to my original idea though, I might never finish a story because I'd be too busy rewriting the same idea a dozen different ways.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? In the womb perhaps? *giggle* I honestly can't recall a time that I didn't dabble in some form of poetry or short stories.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? Absolutely. When ideas are flowing and real life takes me away from the keyboard, it's sometimes a challenge to keep my mind off the story I'm creating and focus on what's around me.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? Not yet, but I hope that changes. I am attending Indie bash 10/26/13 in Springdale, AR, along with about 30 other fabulous authors. I'm super excited about it and can't wait to meet the readers in person.

Who designed the covers? Didn't she do a gorgeous job? Rene Folsom with Phycel Designs.

What was the hardest part of writing your book? Writing, "The End." It's bittersweet when the character's stories come to a close.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Continue to share your stories with the world because you are the only one who knows that story. For aspiring writers: Every day, carve out time to write. Even if you only write one sentence.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? The beauty behind a writer's words would fall flat if the readers didn't take the time to read, review and share. Thank you for being absolutely amazing.

Blurb

When the World was FlatLooking back, I wonder if I had an inkling that my life was about to go from ordinary to extraordinary.

When sixteen-year-old Lillie Hart meets the gorgeous and mysterious Tom Windsor-Smith for the first time, it’s like fireworks — for her, anyway. Tom looks as if he would be more interested in watching paint dry; as if he is bored by her and by her small Nebraskan town in general.

But as Lillie begins to break down the walls of his seemingly impenetrable exterior, she starts to suspect that he holds the answers to her reoccurring nightmares and to the impossible memories which keep bubbling to the surface of her mind — memories of the two of them, together and in love.

When she at last learns the truth about their connection, Lillie discovers that Tom has been hiding an earth-shattering secret; a secret that is bigger — and much more terrifying and beautiful — than the both of them. She also discovers that once you finally understand that the world is round, there is no way to make it flat again.

An epic and deeply original sci-fi romance, taking inspiration from Albert Einstein’s theories and the world-bending wonder of true love itself.

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

For a good portion of the book we have mostly a high school angsty book, which adds to the depth of the characters and gives us some of their background, and then as the book draws to a close we get the more sci-fi aspect of the story. The romance aspect of the book builds slowly and peaks around 75%.

While I enjoyed this book I felt there were parts that were rushed and parts that came a little too late in the book. The connection between Lillie and Tom comes a little too late for me. In the earlier parts of the book I struggled to see Lillie's attraction and as a result I didn't really understand the teasing from her friends. When we did finally get down to the connection I felt we were rushed through the explanation. We could have had more interaction between Lillie and her friends. There wasn't really anything in the book that told me that they had this great friendship, even from the beginning of the book that aspect felt a little forced.

Once I saw where the plot was going I had a 'ahaa' moment where I knew what was going on.. but then I have seen the movie Jet Li's 'The One' and my brain just instantly made the connection. It didn't make the story any less enjoyable though. As we neared the end of the story my heart broke for Lillie, but the conclusion of the book had me sighing with happiness. The way Jonach has written the story draws the reader in. It is a smooth and easy read, so much so that I was able to read this book in one day, although it did keep me up until after 1am. All in you are left with a thoroughly enjoyable young adult read.

Hello Ingrid and welcome to Booky Ramblings of a Neurotic Mom

What inspired you to write your first book?

IMAGE A LOT OF THINGSMy first book was a picture book called A Lot of Things. I actually wrote it while I was at university, as part of a class called Writing for Young People. It is about a dad who collects a lot of things (funnily enough!), who is forced to choose between his possessions and his children. It was inspired by my own hoarding and there is definitely a hint of Dr. Seuss, with nonsensical words like Whatchamacallits and Thingamabobs.

Do you have a specific writing style?

My writing style tends to be a bit old-fashioned – inspired by writers like Ernest Hemingway and Jane Austen. It probably makes you wonder why I write for teens! I think my aversion to long descriptions and too many adjectives modernizes my writing – although I am a fan of similes and metaphors if not overused.

How did you come up with the title for When the World was Flat?

It was inspired by a quote from Christopher Columbus: Following the light of the sun, we left the Old World. I felt that the quote really summed up the story and was originally included as the epigraph at the beginning of the novel, but in the end we (my literary agent and I) decided to include a quote from Albert Einstein instead, as he is much more relevant to the story.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I wrote the novel as entertainment first and foremost, but there are strong themes of searching for identity and self-acceptance, which I think is common in young adult literature.

Overall though, I would love readers to walk away from the book with a sense of wonder about the world and its possibilities.

How much of the book is based on your life experiences?

More than I originally thought. The story itself is fictional, but there are many scenes that mimic my own teenage years, particularly the interactions between Lillie, Jo and Sylv. There is also a scene where the characters play chicken with a train, which was inspired by the stupid stuff my friends and I used to do when we caught the train to school.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life?IMAGE FRANKIE GOES TO FRANCE

I used to think not, but then I realized that I often write about single parent families and the focus tends to be on the mother (my mother was a single parent until my step father entered our lives).

Readers often think that authors model the main character on themselves, but I think the main character in The Frank Frankie and its sequel Frankie goes to France is modeled on my sister, who is much more outgoing. I think Lillie in When the World was Flat (and we were in love) is more like me.

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most?

I would have to say When the World was Flat (and we were in love), because it is the first time I have been published internationally. It has really opened up my world (mind the pun!) by introducing me to a range of wonderful bloggers, readers and authors across the globe.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I am very lucky that my cousin is bestselling romance novelist Di Morrissey. Di has nurtured my writing from an early age and I have had the pleasure of seeing her speak at literary luncheons and other events, including when she was featured on the Australian TV show This is Your Life. I think she has to be one of the most generous people that I know and she has really taken me under her wing, for which I am grateful.

What book are you reading now?

I am actually lucky enough to be getting a sneak preview of the next book in the Risen Sun trilogy by K. J. Taylor. There are certainly some perks to living in the same city as your favorite authors!

What are your current projects?

I am currently finalizing a standalone novel, which has loose connections to When the World was Flat (and we were in love). It is a sci fi romance novel with a touch of horror.

I have also been playing around with a draft for a sequel to When the World was Flat (and we were in love).

Do you see your writing as a career?

I definitely do, but I do have a day job. It takes a long time to write a novel (for me anyway) and treating it as a profession rather than a hobby means you tend to prioritize it.

Being an author is also not just about writing, but being able to participate in the industry, e.g. selling your book, promoting your book, and working with agents and editors. With that in mind, it makes sense to treat it like you would any other job where you have deadlines and stakeholders.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I think there are always things you would change if you did another rewrite. But, as Leonardo da Vinci said, “Art is never finished, only abandoned.”

I made a lot of decisions during the editing process with my agent and publisher to remove certain characters, as well as the prologue and epilogue, and I do wonder what readers would have thought of these deleted characters or scenes.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

IMAGE THE OLD LADYMy love of reading was definitely what led me to writing. I used to draw pictures to accompany my stories when I was younger and I even had a poem and a drawing published in the school year book when I was in year two. It was a retake on the nursery rhyme, There was an old lady who swallowed a fly.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

It is too early to share the synopsis of my current WIP unfortunately, but I can share a little snippet about one of the characters (noting that this will probably not be in the final version of the book given the thousands of revisions between now and then – if it is even published!).

This snippet is about Mali, the main character’s best friend. I have loved writing Mali. She reminds me of Sylv, who is a really extroverted character in When the World was Flat (and we were in love).

Excerpt from WIP:

Mali jumped up and down with a squeal, and then wiped her palms on her skirt. She had been diagnosed with a condition called hyperhidrosis last winter. It had been thirty degrees and below, but her hands had been like two wet washcloths 24/7. Her mom had sent her to three doctors and a dermatologist who told her it was a hereditary condition, and now she has to spray anti-perspirant on her palms three or four times a day. She must have skipped the anti-perspirant this morning, I thought as she wiped her palms on her skirt again.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

This is a bit embarrassing, but I hate contractions. I tend to construct my sentences to avoid words like don’t, can’t, won’t, etc. The result is that old fashioned writing style that I mentioned earlier. It can present challenges when I have to make a call on either having a clunky sentence or a contraction (of course, the contraction wins in those cases).

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

I am actually yet to meet my agent and editor face-to-face (the former is in New York and the latter is in the UK) and I really hope to one day soon.

I am lucky that I have family in the US and have gone on a few road trips with them and with my husband, which I count as research for When the World was Flat (and we were in love).

In terms of promotion, I am very lucky to live in the day of the internet (e.g. I am currently touring the world as part of my Around the World in 80 Days Blog Tour! Lol!). That being said, I would like to do some actual travel next year as a combination of promotion of my current book and research for my next book.

Who designs your cover(s)?

The cover for When the World was Flat (and we were in love) was designed by a company called Argh! Oxford. They worked with my publisher (with my input) to come up with the beautiful image of the key against the flagstone.

My previous covers (for my children’s books) were designed by the publisher, using illustrations from the books.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

I had a few action scenes in When the World was Flat (and we were in love), which is not my forte. These are scenes that involve either fist fights, car chases or car accidents. I am not the girl who played with action figures as a kid (although I did play with matchbox cars with my brothers) and I would take a movie and dinner over sky-diving anyday. That being said, these scenes have actually become my favorite parts of the novel.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

If you are not yet published – keep at it. You will be if you persevere. It is true what they say about one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration (or blood, sweat and many tears).

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you. Really. I am extremely grateful that When the World is Flat (and we were in love) is being read and enjoyed across the world. I am still pinching myself! And when I see a good review I feel like I have found a kindred spirit, as books are so subjective.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer our questions.

What Maisie Knew Review

wmk       What Maisie Knew by Henry James

       Synopsis

What Maisie Knew represents one of James's finest reflections on the rites of passage from wonder to knowledge, and the question of their finality. The child of violently divorced parents, Maisie Farange opens her eyes on a distinctly modern world.

Lisa's Review - 2 out of 5 stars

I will be completely, 100% honest and admit one of the reasons I read What Maisie Knew was because I saw that it has recently been made into a movie, and I love one of the stars, so I decided to read the book first before watching the movie, which is something I always do when it comes to movies based on books.

Well, before coming to that decision, maybe I should have looked up the book a little more. I had no idea just how long ago this book had been written, and in fact when I received my copy from Penguin, the new 'movie version' cover, and the blurb on the back of the book, still didn't give away the fact that What Maisie Knew was originally written in 1897. This is where my problems began!

What first made me want to read What Maisie Knew was thinking this was going to be a rather interesting story of a child in a broken home, from the child's point of view. While the story does focus on a problem that still occurs nowadays in broken homes, where a child us used as a pawn between two parents in awful ways, the story was not what I thought it was going to be at all.

I found this really difficult to read due to the old fashioned language, and would read whole paragraphs, if not pages, without understanding any of what I had read. I also found the whole story really complicated, Maisie's awful parents aside, chucking in the step parents arguing over her as well as governesses and so on, it was really hard to keep track of.

There were parts of the book that when I understood what was going on, they were quite enjoyable to read, and as previously said it shows that problems occurring from divorce are not a new thing and in fact were happening many years ago, too.

I do consider myself to be a fairly well read person, but maybe old classics are not my forte and I need to stick to more modern styles of books!

Cowboy Town book blitz

Ever since her parents passed away in a tragic car accident, Eden Cross has been living a quiet, stable and predictable life in inner Sydney – the total opposite of her carefree, relaxed, happy-go-lucky past. Her parents passing and the fact she’s an only child meant Eden was left with her best friend, Jules and Matt, her boyfriend of three years as her only family. That was until she discovered something about Matt that would turn her life upside down. Eden leaves Sydney in a hurry and begins an adventure that takes her across four Australian states before she lands in Pine Creek, Northern Territory.Jackson Henley has lived in Pine Creek his entire life. He runs a massive cattle and cropping station with his twin brother, Jeremy, which they inherited when their parents retired. He’s had a bad experience with relationships courtesy of The Bitch - Dannika, so lately he’s preferred to play the field. That is, until he comes face to face with the stunning brunette beauty who’s behind the bar at the Cow and Calf. The problem is, she won’t tell him her name, she won’t give him the time of day, and she won’t give him a chance to prove himself.

What’s it going to take for Eden to give Jackson a chance? Does he have the patience to even bother fighting for her? How will he handle the competition?

In the end, will Jackson have what it takes to convince Eden to start living again, instead of just existing?

“Hey, gorgeous, can I get another
beer?”  I turn my attention from the
one-man show and spot Luke, the guy who was here yesterday, and he’s waving an
empty glass at me.

“Sure thing,” I reply.  I grab a glass and pull his beer, hand it to him, take his money and return his change.

“So, Dory’s put ya to work, has she?”

“Just helping her out for tonight,” I smile, then sweep my gaze along the bar checking that no one needs refills.  It’s during this exercise that I spot the man who has just walked in.
My breath gets caught in my throat as I watch him take a seat at the bar.  I see his lips move and he’s smiling at people but it’s too loud to hear what he’s saying.  I’m captivated.  He’s utterly gorgeous.  The epitome of Cowboy Hot.  His hair is dark and his jaw is square.  His body is built – broad across the shoulders and narrowing slightly at his hips. He spots someone across the bar and hands them a fully-fledged, bright white, straight-toothed smile.  My breath leaves me in a whoosh, and then
catches again as what has to be his twin slides onto the stool beside him.  Oh my
fucking god.

I’ve got a job to do.  I have to pull it together.  It’s not like I’ve never been in contact with good looking guys before.  I worked in one of Sydney’s hottest bars for four years for fuck’s sake.  I mentally slap myself across the face and tell myself to pull it together.  Then I walk across to where they’re sitting and set about getting their order.

“What’ll it be, boys?” I ask in my most relaxed I’m-not-affected-by-you-at-all voice.

Hotty One unashamedly rakes his gaze over my body. Slowly.So slowly, I feel my blood start to heat – just from him looking at me.  I must be going mad.  Perhaps it’s the heat up here. I’m not used to it all. I really should have worn some linen shorts instead of jeans.

“You, later,” he winks suggestively when he finally pulls his eyes to mine.  Now, don’t get me wrong – the wink was hot. Fucking hot.  It was the way he said it that turned me off.  You know those guys that can get anyone they want? Yeah, they’re not so bad.  It’s the ones who can get anyone they want, and they know it, and they show it – that’s the turn off.  Just with that line, Hotty One has shown me he’s a player, unfaithful, untrustworthy and most definitely not the kind of guy I want to get involved with – in bed, or out of.  But, as a woman, I’d rather die than have him know how he affected me, so I tilt my head to the side, smile my cheeky smile and say, “Not tonight, handsome. Or ever.  Drink?”

* My friends laugh at me because I will talk to anyone, anywhere.  It's funny now but it wasn't so funny for my mum when she had to drag me away from strange homeless people at the train station when I was little, and I may or may not have been going to go in crop dusting plane with a man I'd just met when I was about 4!!

* I read fiction until I was 11 years old.  After that I read non-fiction, true crime, bio's etc.  When my son Jovi drowned in 2011, I found I couldn't bring myself to read non fiction anymore - it was too "real".  Fifty Shades was dominating the media so I got myself a copy and I'm not ashamed to say I read all three of those books at least ten times each.  They allowed me to forget my reality for a little while.  Then I decided that I was going to follow my dreams and write.  I wanted to show my children that just because their brother died, didn't mean they did or our family did.  I want them to reach for the stars and chase their dreams, and the best way to do that is to lead by example!

Mr Lynch's Holiday Review

Mr Lynch's Holiday By Catherine O'Flynn

17930681Welcome to Lomaverde - a new Spanish utopia for those seeking their place in the sun. Now a ghost town where feral cats outnumber the handful of anxious residents. A place of empty pools, long afternoons and unrelenting sunshine.

Here, widowed Midlands bus driver Dermot Lynch turns up one bright morning. He's come to visit his son Eammon and his girlfriend, Laura. Except Eammon never opened Dermot's letter announcing his trip. Just like he can't quite get out of bed, or fix anything, or admit Laura has left him.

Though neither father nor son knows quite what to make of the other, Lomaverde's Brits - Roger and Cheryl, Becca and Iain - see in Dermot a shot of fresh blood. Someone to enliven their goat-hunting trips, their paranoid speculations, the endless barbecuing and bickering.

As Dermot and Eammon gradually reveal to one another the truth about why each left home, both get drawn further into the bizarre rituals of ex-pat life, where they uncover a shocking secret at the community's heart.

A funny and moving story about the clash of generations, Mr Lynch's Holiday is about how families fracture and heal themselves and explores how living 'abroad' can feel less like a holiday and more like a life sentence.

Claire's Review 3 of 5 Stars

Firstly a big thank you to Penguin for kindly Providing me with a paperback copy to review.

This book is not really what I had expected it to be. It was an easy read, the kind of book to take on holiday to read on the beach. Its a lovely well written story tackling the issues between a father and sons relations and issues emigrating.

I did enjoy this book, however I found the beginning very slow and almost gave up on it. I'm glad I didn't as it definitely improved as the book went on.

My Ex from Hell Blog Tour

My Ex From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy, #1)My Ex From Hell by Tellulah Darling

Book Synopsis

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:

a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

Lisa's Review - 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sophie Bloom is the best teenage character I have come across in a book yet! Not your high school perfect princess, she is full of attitude and quirks that make her not only sarcastically hilarious, but totally relatable to the reader. I was not the perfect teenager and sometimes reading some female teenager characters, I find them to be too 'good' to be relatable. Sophie is full of snarky quips and has some brilliant one liner comebacks that made me snort with laughter.

When faced with her identity as Persophene, the Greek Goddess of Spring, after kissing bad boy Kai, memories of her real past are awakened, and when your last memory is of being murdered in your Goddess form, it's not great. Sophie handles it all in her own sarcastic way, which makes the mix of the Greek mythology and teenage angst a really brilliant mix for a book. Sophie must save humanity in the war between Olympus and the Underworld, and as funny and interesting to read as the human, teenage side of the story is, throwing in the Greek Mythology makes an excellent read.

The characters are truly well written - not only is there Sophie's character of Peresephone, Kai is fascinating as Prince of the Underworld, and Hades plays a great role in the book, too. I am looking forward to reading the next instalment and having some more Greek characters in the mix, too.

After reading My Ex From Hell, I couldn't help but compare this to the Percy Jackson books, but I enjoyed this more and felt it was a better Greek Mythology book for teenage girls to read. The only downside I found to the book was that there were just a couple of times when I felt the story jumped from one place to another a little bit too quickly.

Excerpt

In an attempt to lighten the mood, I changed the subject. Uncrossing my legs, I planted my feet slightly apart in front of me and propped my elbows on my knees.

“I also brought some fruit… grapes and strawberries.” I smiled big at my attempt to be sweet.

“Ahh. Actually, grapes would be great, but I’m allergic to strawberries,” he said with a bashful look on his face.

“Oh, what a shame,” I said with a hint of seduction in my voice. “Because they’re very plump and juicy. I just love strawberries.”

“Oh, you do, do you?” he teased.

I nodded, biting my lip out of nervousness with what I was about to do.

Then, I did the most daring thing I could think of.

I grabbed one of the strawberries and slowly brought it to my mouth. I parted my lips and thrust my tongue slightly out to meet with the delicious red morsel. I bit down while sucking the juices slowly. My eyes fluttered and rolled shut as I enjoyed the delicious flavors bursting onto my taste buds. Seductively, I flicked the leftover green cap into the grass beside us, then began licking and sucking on the two fingers that were covered with the sticky juice.

After enjoying each slow chew, I opened my eyes to gaze upon a man with power and hunger in his eyes. Hunger for me.

The next thing I knew, Aiden was on his hands and knees, methodically making his way towards me.

Out of sheer instinct, I backed away while keeping my legs slightly apart and propping myself back on my arms. He continued his prowl until he was kneeling between my knees with both his hands braced beside me.

He edged closer to me, his lips hovering precariously close to mine. A sudden gasp of breath was all I could manage before our lips met.

His right hand steadied my upper back while he held himself up with his left, hovering over me. His chest pressed hot and hard against mine. Our tongues met and tangled together. I struggled for air but couldn’t pull away. He consumed me.

The Eslites: The Arrival

The Eslites, The ArrivalThe Eslites, The Arrival by C.M. Doporto

Book Synopsis

When Miranda, superior donor destined to save the Eslites, learns the human race is in danger along with the donors at Nidus, she decides it’s time for the Eslites to set her and her friends free. Against the odds, she sets out on a quest to convince US government officials that what the Eslites are doing to them is violating the current order in place. Will she succeed or will the Eslites continue to test human females in hopes of producing offspring to save their race?

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

I had the pleasure of Beta reading this for the author. It was a book I had been looking for to reading since I had read The Eslites. Because this is a Beta read it is possible that some scenes may change, and some scenes may be added or deleted, which makes a review fairly difficult.

When I read The Eslites I said I would have liked the story more if it had been longer, I didn't know then that Doporto had intended to release the book in instalments, now that I have had the chance to read more of Miranda's story with the Eslites I can honestly say this instalment is not enough. I want more because I'm greedy like that. And the next instalment cannot come fast enough.

At just 16 there is no doubt that Miranda is a strong character, she is forced into a situation that many older woman wouldn't be able to cope with and she survives. But at the same time she is a typical teenager, some of her decisions are very childish and sometimes downright stupid.

Doporto's writing draws the reader into her world almost effortlessly to the point that it is easy to ignore the world going on around you. This book in particular was so easy to read that I managed it in one sitting.

Hello Christine and welcome to Booky Ramblings of a Neurotic Mom

  1. Do you have a specific writing style?

Definitely. I write as concisely as possible. And because I write concisely, I also need to be as direct as possible or else my readers won’t completely understand my message. I developed my style when I was an English major. I had a teacher who was very strict about writing clearly and concisely. I’ll never forget her. I struggled with writing as concisely as she wanted, but she made me a better writer. What I learned from her back then has stuck with me.

  1. How did you come up with the title?

The title is related to my first two books. They all have “for the” and then either “heart,” “soul,” or “mind.” The heart, soul, and mind are the sources of our emotions, personality, and thoughts/intellect. That is what makes us who we are, so they are very important parts of us. My next book in the “series” will have to be “body.” I haven’t come up with the remainder of the title or concept of the book yet. Maybe it’ll have something to do with fitness, healthy eating, or natural living. I’m not sure, but I’m looking forward to writing it!

  1. How much of the book is based on your life experiences?

It is based mostly on my life experiences and partly on my research. I love to research topics that interest me in order to learn more about them. And my experiences are priceless. I feel that I’ve learned so much in the 3.2 decades that I’ve been alive, and I get anxious to share my experiences and learned lessons with others. I want others to either learn something from my experiences or to know that they are not alone. If I’m able to accomplish that, my experiences have been useful.

  1. Do you see your writing as a career?

Absolutely. Writing and helping others with their writing are my two full-time jobs, which make up my career as an author and provider of publishing services. I love my multifaceted career. And I love how the publishing industry allows me and others to share our writing with the world.

  1. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

Yes. I take writing seriously, because I want to write as well as possible, but my writing can sound too serious sometimes. In real life, I’m an honest person - I don’t usually fib or joke much, because I like to speak the truth and have thoughtful conversations. But sometimes I write too earnestly, so I have to be aware of my “tone” when writing, because I don’t want to portray the wrong message. Because it takes conscious effort, it is the main aspect of writing that I find challenging.

  1. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yes. Write what you enjoy. Write the way that is most natural for you. If you do these things, you will always enjoy writing. If you’re unhappy with the process, change it. Be flexible. Brainstorm what could make it better. Writing is a joy if you find what you like best about it and do it. Once you determine your strengths as a writer, focus on them and they will grow stronger, then you will be successful. Being a writer is a journey of self-discovery and finding what works best for you.

Kat-Napped BETA review

Book Synopsis

Not to mention Kat is currently in love with two men…if you can even call them that. One is a sexy werewolf and the other a smoldering were-cat. Throw her human ex-boyfriend into the mix and Kat may use up all of her nine lives trying to figure out what’s truly worth fighting for.

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

And the evil genius is back. Once again I am left desperate to read the conclusion to a D.T. Dyllin trilogy and this time I have absolutely no idea how long I'm gonna have to wait. This is the down side to agreeing to Beta reading, especially when the story is as captivating as this one.

Once again you are drawn into a story that refuses to let go until you have read every word, which is exactly what happened to me. Just a few short hours is all that it took for me to devour this book in one sitting. This book has sex. By the bucket-load and then some. Smoking hot sex scenes that leave little to the imagination. But do not be fooled into thinking that this is all this book has to offer. This book has plot! We learn a little more about Kats family, we find out what happened to Marc, we get broken hearts, betrayal, a rescue and something I thought might happen but never really expected it so there was a surprise too.

Now please excuse my while I go sob into my pillow because I don't have the last book in the trilogy to read right now and I have no idea how long I will have to wait.

Excerpt

Kaylyn pulled the covers over her head as if they could block out the ruckus threatening her sleep. After another series of knocks on the front door, she was left in silence again. That wasn’t necessarily a good thing.

She held her breath.

Sure enough, a floorboard creaked, then her sister’s voice rang out. “Come on Kay. You can’t avoid me when I have a key. We’re going to be late.”

“Go away, Cole. I’m sick.”

“Bull shit. If anything you’re hung over.”

“I haven’t had a drink in weeks.” Although at the moment, she thought, I’d kill for one…or several. “We’ve worked for Carlisle for more than three years, he won’t—”

“We have a meeting. Mr. Edwards. Historical Society. Wooden box engraved with occult symbols. Ring a bell?”

Oh yeah. Kaylyn groaned as she flipped the covers off her head. Her younger sister stood over the side table, leaning against the inside of the doorway. A crisp pink collar peeked out from the top of her dark grey pea coat, paired with matching grey slacks.

Always overdressed, Kaylyn thought, especially for a job that often had them crawling in dank and dusty places. She pulled herself up, balancing precariously on the edge of the bed before forcing her body to move toward the closet.

“If you don’t hurry up, the cappuccinos will get cold.”

“You know I prefer it that way.” Kaylyn said as she pulled some moderately business-casual clothes out of the clean clothes pile and headed into the bathroom.

“Weirdo,” Cole called after her.

Kaylyn was thankful for the brief moment of silence as she pulled on a pair of black jeans and a blue long-sleeved V-neck. She smoothed out the wrinkles in the shirt then focused on her matted hair, sweeping it up into a low ponytail.

“Come on, sis, we’re supposed to be there at 9:30,” Cole yelled, smacking the bathroom door.

Three days until the weekend, she promised her reflection. Then nothing is stopping me from sleeping as long as I want.

Nothing except the dreams.
