Spellbound review

SpellboundSpellbound by Emmie Dark

Book Synopsis

Belle is a modern-day witch who's had a bad run with men. And she's not that good at the magic stuff, either. When her boyfriend leaves her feeling undesirable, Belle conjures up a night of perfect passion with a phantom version of her super gorgeous neighbour Nicholas Marchetti. But after an amazing night, Belle realises it was the real Nick. And when Nick discovers Belle's powers, he is confused and wary. And to top it all off, it seems someone is using magic to try to keep the would-be lovers apart.

Angst, lust – and Aunty Gertrude – all play a part in this sizzling erotic romance that begins and ends in the bedroom.

For those who like their romance hot, hot, hot

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

I've had this sitting on my kindle for a while, I had requested it from Netgalley but somehow managed to forget about it and it got lost at the bottom of my pile. I had just had the misfortune of picking up a book that I couldnt finish and was desperately searching through my kindle for something 'different'. I had a quick peak at the synopsis on Goodreads, honestly I didn't get any further through the synopsis than
"Belle is a modern-day witch who's had a bad run with men. And she's not that good at the magic stuff, either."

before I decided to go ahead and read it. Perhaps I should have read the entire synopsis, maybe then I would have been prepared for what I read. Pay particular attention to
"play a part in this sizzling erotic romance that begins and ends in the bedroom."

and
"For those who like their romance hot, hot, hot."

In case you haven't realised yet, I will clear things up. This book is full of sex. Full of sex. FULL OF SEX. If you cannot cope with your main characters having more than a kiss and cuddle with a quick fumble do NOT read this. Sometimes when a book contains this much sex the actual romance is lost, the book simply becomes the sex scenes. But Dark has managed to avoid this. What we have here is an intense attraction on both sides, with both parties unable to do something about it.

Within this story there is also a lesson to be learned. One that we have all heard before. One that is ultimately true. Before anyone else can love us we have to love ourselves.

This was well written and as such made it a comfortable and enjoyable read, so much so that I finished it in one sitting. If this is the quality of writing to be expected from Miss Dark then I want to read more.

About the author.

After years of writing press releases, employee newsletters and speeches for CEOs and politicians - none of which included any kind of kissing - Emmie Dark finally took to her laptop to write what she wanted to write. She was both amazed and delighted to discover that what came out were sexy, noble heroes who found themselves crossing paths with strong, determined heroines. And plenty of kissing.

Emmie's published works include two Harlequin Super Romance novels, Cassie's Grand Plan and In His Eyes.

Emmie lives in Melbourne, and she likes red lipstick, chardonnay, sunshine, driving fast, rose-scented soap and a really good cup of tea. Like, a really good cup of tea. She's particularly fussy about it, and has to pack her own teabags when she travels. Most members of her family are to scared to make her a cuppa, in case they get it wrong.

Coming Back to You review

Coming Back to YouComing Back to You by Devon Youngblood

***New Adult Romance***

Coming Late 2013/Early 2014
**Warning: Contains strong language, and sexual situations.**

Shona's review 2 of 5 stars

The writing feels stifled, almost like Maura is talking to a group of people she doesn't know and is nervous. I hoped that this would improve throughout the book but it never really does. As a result the book never really flows for me and at various points through the book it felt more like Maura was simply reading off her shopping list. If scenes were given more to flesh them out the story would flow more freely and feel more comfortable for the reader.

I have to say I was confused by the total over reaction to seeing her ex in the club. Not to mention the "I just can't believe the nerve Pierson has to show his face after all these years". Erm hello, it's his home town too. What was the guys crime? he ended their 3 1/2 year relationship when he signed up to the marines rather than tying her to a long distance relationship. I could understand if he'd left her pregnant after lying to her and stealing all her money... Maybe I'm being too harsh? She did say he was the love of her life..

So after 5 years with no contact the ex comes home. Bumps into her when she is out at a club (the second time) and essentially drives away the guy she was dancing with using the line "she's with me" and she says its fine??? Then loses her temper when he tells her he doesn't want anyone else dancing with her. The next day he asks her out to dinner and her reply "You think you can just swoop in and I'm going to fawn over you? and is outraged when he says "why not? they are!" meaning the rest of the town, although she's livid with his reply she agrees to go out for dinner??? Really.

One dinner and two chapters later and she "likes having him back in her life". But still complains to her friend "You know everyone has left me at some point. I don't think I could take one more heartbreak." Pierson's abandonment when he joined the Marine Corps along with my parents' deaths was enough to give me serious desertion issues. Everyone has left her at some point? Seriously? Her parents died 2 years before in an accident when she was 21.. hardly an abandonment. It  feels like Youngblood is trying too hard to give her protagonist something that she needs to overcome... And that's before we even touch on Pierson's issues.

All this aside the idea behind the book was a good one. Maura was left heartbroken by her boyfriend (but we never get to even glimpse that heart-break), the one and only guy that she ever loved. Then him coming back to town after 5 years apart and him regretting the way he left things, always loving her and hoping they could be together again, but with obstacles in their way in the form of his PTSD, (which was the only thing I felt gave this couple any substance) before finally working through it and finding a way for them to be together. This could have been an epic love and with a little extra in the scenes it could be a really great read. I honestly struggled with my star rating for this book and I finally settled on the traditional Goodreads rating. I didn't hate it, but I can't say I liked it. It was a 2 star 'Ok'

The Husband's Secret review

ths  The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty

  Synopsis

To be opened in the event of my death

With one swift, vicious movement, she sliced the envelope open, and pulled out a handwritten letter.

love you and the girls...
so sorry to leave you with this...
cannot bear

The Husband's Secret is a funny, heartbreaking novel of marriage, grief, love and secrets. When her husband announces he's in love with her best friend, painfully shy Tess picks up her young son and returns to her mother's house. There she begins an unexpected affair with an old flame. Rachel is a woman in her sixties consumed by grief and anger at the loss of her daughter twenty years earlier. When her son announces he is taking her beloved grandson overseas, Rachel begins a descent into deeper bitterness and pain. Cecilia is the quintessential "I don't know how she does it" woman. A devoted mother to three daughters, she runs her household like clockwork, is President of the P&C, owns an extremely successful Tupperware business and is happy in her fifteen-year marriage. Until she discovers a letter in their attic labelled: "To my wife Cecilia, to be opened in the event of my death"... Her husband's secret is a bombshell beyond all imagining with repercussions across the lives of all three women

Lisa's Review - 4.5 out of 5 stars

I will be honest and say I only read the first few lines of the synopsis before deciding this was a book I wanted to read, so when I actually realised this was a book revolving around 3 different women's stories that all intertwined into one, I was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting it to revolve around Cecelia and the letter she finds from her husband and how they deal with whatever the letter contained, so to have the other women's stories included was an added bonus for me!

Each individual story of Cecelia, Tess, and Rachel, is brilliant in its own right, and had these been individual stories, I would have enjoyed them, too. The fact that they are all connected makes this book brilliant. Cecelia is the almost perfect housewife, successful Tupperware saleswoman, works hard for the school and her children, but also has those few little taints that make her a normal woman. Tess is shy but successful, living her with her husband and son, and thinks everything is perfect until she finds out her cousin, who is more like her twin sister, and her husband, have fallen 'in love' with one another, so she packs up her son and heads to her mothers house, where she meets up with an ex boyfriend. And Rachel, the woman struggling every day to come to terms with the murder of her daughter, 28 years ago.

At first as I read I wasn't sure how these stories were connected, but with such ease the author begins to finely intertwine these individual stories together to become one in a breathtaking way. The women's stories are deep and emotional, but enough light hearted moments are included to stop this book from becoming over intense.

Although it becomes almost obvious what the letter from Cecelia's husband contains, it does not stop it from becoming a shocking moment in the book and poses that million dollar question - 'what would you do?' At first you would think the answer would be obvious but it does make you think and question whether you would go with that first instinct.

The only reason I didn't give this book a 5 star is because I was slightly disappointed by the ending. By personal preference I wanted to see a slightly different ending for at least one of the characters and had willed the ending I wanted, so when it was different I was a little let down. I did really enjoy this book though and was really pleased I stumbled across it.

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

Holy fuuuuuuuuu...... Once again my head is blown by the sheer awesomeness that is DT Dyllin. I'm really beginning to think that this woman's literary pen vomits awesome.  And as an added bonus she is accompanied by Kenya Wright, this may be the first time I have read any of Kenya's work but after this I can guarantee it wont be the last. I have just devoured this and I am struggling to put down in words what I am thinking/feeling, so I'm gonna have to leave it and comeback to it once I have had a chance to let it all sink in.

The romance and sexiness aside I have never read anything like this before. The whole 'cyber erotica' label put me off in the same way that 'steam punk' does. Don't ask me why because I honestly don't know. The only reason I read this was because Dara was involved. I straight up love this womans writing, I have loved everything she has written so far and I had no reason to doubt this would be any different. And I wasn't wrong.

This book grabs you by the seat of your pants and drags you into the action from the very first chapter. Unlike several 'erotica' stories there is an actual story to this book but there is also a lot of romance and sexy bits. "My dick pressed against my pants - hard, long and ready - " when a book begins like this I dare you to try to walk away. Never before have I been blown away by the 'not sex' in a book before, so many authors would have thrown you in to a full on sexual encounter at the first opportunity, not these two. Instead they give you an intense sexual experience that makes you squirm in your seat at the sheer sexiness of it all without going for all out penetration. But don't despair the all out penetration will come.

Penn have given us believable characters with flaws. Two characters who are broken by their pasts and trying to make their futures brighter.  Will they be able to fix each other?

About the Authors

K.D. Penn is a pseudonym for the writing team of Kenya Wright and D.T. Dyllin. Or to make it simpler for you…

Kenya
Wright always knew she would be famous since the ripe old age of six when she sang the Michael Jackson thriller song in her bathroom mirror. She has tried her hand at many things from enlisting in the Navy for six years as a Persian-Farsi linguist to being a nude model at an art university. However, writing has been the only constant love in her life. Will she succeed? Of course.

For she has been coined The Urban Fantasy Queen, the Super Iconic Writer of this Age, The Lyrical Genius of Our Generation. Granted, these are all terms coined by her, within the private walls of her bathroom as she still sings the Michael Jackson thriller song.

Kenya Wright currently resides in Miami with her three amazing, overactive children, a supportive, gorgeous husband, and three cool black cats that refuse to stop sleeping on Kenya’s head at night.

About the Author

Laurelin Paige is a sucker for a good romance and gets giddy anytime there’s kissing, much to the embarrassment of her three daughters. Her husband doesn’t seem to complain, however. When she isn’t reading or writing sexy stories, she’s probably singing, watching Mad Men and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Adam Levine. She is represented by the wonderful Bob Diforio of D4EO Literary Agency.

The Scene (Dylan Hart #1)

Irreverent twenty-something, Dylan Hart, has her little black heart set to cash-in on the blood-drained bodies of seven prostitutes scattered throughout southern California.
In search of the culprit of the media-dubbed Vampire Massacres, journalist Dylan Hart dives head first into L.A.’s sanguinary ‘vampire’ subculture, in an attempt to write her first best-selling novel and pay off her ever growing student debt.
Dylan drinks whiskey, smokes like a chimney, and possesses a mouth she wouldn’t kiss her mama with and with the aid of her statuesque hetero-life-mate Tatum Price, Dylan takes the case head-on, slicing her way through the absurd, the ethereal and the deadly serious, of the underground ‘vampire’ community. But lies and skepticism keep Dylan from the facts hidden within fiction and the danger lurking right under her nose. It’s all shits and giggles until a dead body pops up at your back door.

Claire's Review 5 of 5 Stars

Wow where do I start! I had heard great things about this book and it had been on my tbr list for a while, so when the opportunity arose to review I jumped at the chance, and boy was I not disappointed.
After the first few chapters I was hooked! I loved the dynamics of the characters and the fact that Dylan isn't your typical perfect heroine, but a person with flaws and a lot of doubt in herself. I felt she was a character that you could really relate to! I found myself trying to guess the outcome the whole way through and not once did it cross my mind to be what it was! I actually felt a bit stupid for not realising sooner as when I found out it seemed an obvious choice!
This scene is incredibly well written and keeps you hooked from the very beginning. I struggled to put the book down and read in only a few sittings, although if it wasn't for life getting in the way I could have easily completed it in one sitting! I cannot wait to see what lies for Dylan and the gang in the next instalment!

Endless Night (Dylan Hart #2)

The bitch is back in this second installment of the Dylan Hart Odyssey of the Occult series. The irreverent Dylan Hart, once again, graces us with her presence, this time from down in New Orleans. She has drug along her band of misfit vampires, but this time blood drinkers are the least of her worries. Dylan finds herself entangled in the underground world of blood and lust when she encounters a new, and much more frightening, villain. Voodoo. Who do?

Claire's Review 5 of 5 Stars

Ok I am now totally in love with Dylan Hart. She isn't your stereotypical character, she feels real! She has insecurities like we all do and her behaviour is far from perfect! And this makes her perfect in my eyes.
I'm totally finding myself torn between love interests, but feel a lot of sympathy for Mike at this point. I would love to be able to learn more about their relationship prior to where the books start.
I have one massive problem with this book though.....the 3rd one isn't out and I'm impatient!!!

Author Interview

What inspired you to write your first book?

Alcohol.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I’ve been told my style is ‘unique’ but I just write it like I’d say it. I guess I want readers to feel like they are hearing a story told from their best friend. Or a drunken bar mate.

How did you come up with the title?

The first book in the Dylan Hart series comes to us today by the letter V for vampires. No wait – that’s not right. Not really anyway. ‘The Scene’ refers to the vampire club scene found in many metropolitan areas. While I was researching sanguinarians (lifestyle vampires – those are real people I promise – who drink blood for whatever reason) and Psy-vamps (people who feed on your energy for nourishment – also real people) I came across so many references to ‘The Scene’ I couldn’t think of a better name for a book. As far as the second book – Endless Night – it refers to the lack of sun in the story, but also is a nod to the real Endless Night vampire ball that the Masque de Sang ball in the book is based on. The series ‘Odyssey of the Occult’ was my way of not taking anything seriously. While Dylan faces scary and unbelievable adventures each book is a new journey, or odyssey, into another piece of the occult puzzle, she takes everything in stride and never takes herself or anything else too seriously. Unless, of course, it’s a death thing or someone trying to kill her. But all in all she just wants to write a damn book – similar to Odysseus just wanting to go home.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Stop taking everything so seriously. Find the funny in life and laugh your ass off. Question the world around you, never take anything at face value, and do the damn thing with a beer in one hand and a double barrel in the other.

How much of the book is realistic?

A lot! More than people realize I think. I’ve had a few reviewers seem a bit confused at the reality of vampires – are they real or not? – well the ones in The Scene are – to a point. Sanguinarians are real people. The vampire clubs mentioned in each of the first two books are based on real clubs and events. I’ve added fiction and tweaked it a bit to fit the story, but even down to the rituals at the Houses and cabals there is a lot of fact weaved through the fiction. It all goes along with the theme of the Dylan Hart series – fact is hidden in fiction and it’s living, breathing, and killing right under your nose.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Everything. All of it. And not of it. Mannerisms, quotes, personalities, names, a lot of it comes from people and experiences in my life. There are more than a few Dylan Hart quotes that are inside jokes. If readers got it – hell yeah – if not that’s fine – it wasn’t put there for them. Entire characters – Nana from the Lynnie Russell trilogy – is the embodiment of my Nana. Down to the sound of her many rings clacking together, it’s her.

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most?

The ones I haven’t written yet. The scene roll through my head like continuous movie trailers begging to be put to paper. There are a lot in there waiting to be let out but my poor little fingers just can’t type that fast. The one stuck in my head most often is the last Dylan Hart book. Yes, there is a ‘last’. No, you have some time.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Dr Seuss. Oh, the Places You'll Go! Full of so many memorable quotes. This one stuck with me.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”

What book are you reading now?

A few things. But I’m kind of in a reading funk. I’m working on a YA book (not my fave but I liked the first one) by Juliann Whicker. It’s good and I’m glad to see the characters progressing. On the flip side I have CM Stunich’s Real Ugly cued up on the Kindle. I like the characters, the writing style, or tense I should say, is not my usual read and is taking some getting used to. I’ve started a few others in the last month but just haven’t been able to let my brain sink in to a book. I dunno why.

What are your current projects?

There’s a folder on my desktop labelled – WIP work in progress. It’s filled with partial chapters, notes, starts, short stories, and other crap that leaks out of my head. But, for the most part, I’m working on Dylan Hart book 3 – Sacrifice.

Do you see your writing as a career?

Sure. I have a day job – like Clark Kent – but writing is what I actually like to do and what I want to do until I finally die. Oooh, what if I wrote from beyond the grave? Would you buy books written by a ghost?

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

Yes, lots. But I like change am constantly thinking of how to make things different.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I was drunk.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Here’s a bit from Sacrifice – Dylan Hart book three.

I scoffed. “Bullshit.”

“Believe what you want, it doesn’t matter to me. But can you please try to believe in the magic that is after you because it is real and it is here no questions asked.”

“I thought you told me to not believe?” I asked, remembering the conversation we had in a poorly lit back hallway just after I’d tripped over a non-existent corpse. “You said believing fuels the magic. Or some shit like that.”

“It’s too late for that. You’ve already let it in. Disbelieving now will only damper any attempts to save you. Do you understand?”

I mulled over his words for a bit. I was there. I’d seen the girls. Each and every pale set of bound hands and stumpy neck-hole, I’d seen with my own eyes. Blood oozing from my own phantom wounds, twice. I was there for it all. It took a while for my head to wrap around it at first. Right up until some unseen demon chased me down the street and up my stairs I was a skeptic. Now, it wasn’t so easy not to believe. But my overly rational sensibilities told me otherwise. The struggle between good and evil is nothing compared to the inner struggle one faces when the occult is introduced.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I hate romance. Writing sex scenes terrifies me. The act is lovely and I do it often, but writing it down and trying to take it all seriously is just not something I can wrap my brain around. Give me a good fight seen, bloody death, dismemberment, cynical comebacks, idle threats, I’m your girl. Ask me to create a scene in which two people bump uglies and I’m lost.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?

Not yet. I was just surprised with a trip to New Orleans next summer by my lovely husband. A bit late for a research trip, but I plan on making a few stops along the way. Including a vampire shop where Dylan Hart paperbacks are sold.

Who designed the covers?

Mostly me. I have beta readers that help plot out the ideas for covers, but in the end it’s just me.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Not sure. Difficulties come and go as each book grows and becomes book-like. Writers block is a constant irritant and happens a lot. I guess the hardest part of writing in general for me is finding time. I write on my phone, I have a tablet, and a laptop all synced together so I can write wherever I am. If I didn’t I’d never get any writing done with my schedule.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Make friends. Don’t screw those friends over. And ask them lots of questions. Authors, bloggers, editors, publishers, they are all your friend until someone tells you otherwise. Don’t assume they are aware of this rule so don’t be a creep. Just be awesome and get to know people in the business. Even if they’re just starting out – doesn’t matter – eventually they may hit milestones before you, but you were there from the start. A great friend who happens to write books. In my year of publication I’ve made some really good friends – legit friends not fake ones – and I wouldn’t give them up.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thanks for kicking ass and taking names. Keep spreading Dylan around like the clap on the varsity swim team.

Happy Birthday Dara

new_edited-1

I have met friends through various aspects of my life. But never before have I had the pleasure of making new friends through a book and the author who wrote it.  We all sort of knew each other through Facebook in one way or another, but it wasn't until Dara asked us to read her books that we really got to know each other. We may have argued a little over the finer qualities of certain men.. but we all agreed we were most definitely Dragon Hussies and we loved Dara. Which is why we have put together this birthday bash.

Happy birthday Dara, You are one of the best people I have had the pleasure to 'meet', not only are you one of my most favourite of authors but I also have the pleasure of calling you my friend. And as such you deserve the most awesome of birthdays. You can guarantee I will be drinking birthday shots just for you tonight.

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars

This book caught me from just the first few pages and before I knew it half the book was gone and so was half my day. This is such an easy and enjoyable read  that I actually managed to finish it in just one day. The first time in a long time I have been able to do that.

I read this book specifically for the tour (that doesn't mean my review is not an honest one. I ONLY post honest reviews), but when i started to build my review I realised that actually I had come across this cover a few times, and for some reason I had not picked it up. Now of course I'm sat here feeling like I have egg on my face because I truly loved this book.

Cassie could have been me.  No I don't come from a magical family (more's the pity) but I found myself connecting with Cassie  on several matters throughout the book. On paper I guess you would say Cassie is the weak link in her family, the one without magical powers.  But despite her lack of powers it doesn't prevent her from doing what she can to protect not just her family, but the people of her town from a vampire.

This was a great mix of paranormal, crime, mystery, romance and a few comedic spots that had me laughing loud enough I had to read sections to my husband. I cant wait to read what happens next for Cassie.

Lover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood #2) Review

LELover Eternal (Black Dagger Brotherhood #2) by J. R Ward
Synopsis

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war raging between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret bound of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Possessed by a deadly beast Rhage is the most dangerous of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Within the brotherhood, Rhage is the vampire with the strongest appetites. He's the best fighter, the quickest to act on his impulses, and the most voracious lover-for inside him burns ferocious curse cast by the Scribe Virgin. Owned by this dark side, Rhage fears the time when his inner dragon is unleashed, making him a danger to everyone around him.

Mary Luce, a survivor of many hardships is unwittingly thrown into the vampire world and reliant to Rhage's protection. With a life-threatening curse of her own, Mary is not looking for love. She lost her faith in miracles years ago. But when Rhage's intense animal attraction turns into something more emotional, he knows that he must make Mary his alone. And while their enemies close in, Mary fights desperately to gain life eternal with the one she loves...

Lisa's Review - 5 out of 5 stars

After reading Dark Lover for our Book Club a while back, I couldn't wait to get down my reading list and be able to start number 2 in the series, but I was a little hesitant when I finally got to it. Dark Lover was focused on Wrath, and I completely fell in love with that bad ass vampire, and thought he was so well written that even though I knew there was a whole army of the Black Dagger Brotherhood vampires, I couldn't see how any of them could be as fascinating to read about as Wrath was.

And I was WRONG! Lover Eternal shines the spotlight on Rhage, the cursed vampire who literally has an inner beast. Another great big, hulking menace of a vampire who is constantly battling with his inner demons, quickly becomes another very lovable member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, when he meets a human woman and falls in love, all the time battling to fight his feelings for her as she is a human who is not supposed to know about vampires. But Rhage fights for Mary, a frail human being, and although their love itself is a battle, you find yourself constantly willing that they will win the battle together.

As with Dark Lover, although Rhage is the main character in the book, a good deal of time is spent into building up the other members of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, and after two books I feel a connection enough with the other vampires that I feel I know them, and I can't wait to read all of their individual stories now, even though I have loved the first two vampires so much, I often find with a series that jumps between each character that I am constantly trying to read quickly though certain books to get back to one that focuses on a favourite, yet J.R Ward has managed to write in enough of all the vampires in the books that I want to find out more about the others, as well as quenching the thirst for the favourites - in fact I get the feeling that the more I read of these books, I won't have a favourite vampire as I'll love them all!

I really enjoyed that towards the end of this book, it becomes apparent that the next book might follow straight on with the introduction to Zsadist's story, and even though he appears to be the coldest and most menacing vampire of the group, already I can't wait for his story thanks to the last few chapters of Lover Eternal.

I read this book in one day, it was a real can't-put-it-down read, and as the first in the series was the same, I think I am going to get through the rest of the series just as quick thanks to J.R.Wards fantastic writing skills.

Empath review book blitz

Empath eBook cover SMI'm very excited to announce the release of my latest New Adult novel Empath, the first book in the Flawed Series. Read on to find out more about this paranormal thriller and be sure to enter the giveaway at the end for an awesome prize package.

The Struggle of an Empath

Supernatural empathy isn’t a gift, it’s a curse. Anywhere she goes, Jade’s emotions are replaced by those of the people around her.

Jade grew up in a suburb of Colorado Springs, protected from other people by her parents. Now she faces college—and the world—with nothing to shield her from unwanted feelings.

When Cam, a classmate with a major crush on her unintentionally hijacks her emotions, Jade struggles to keep from being carried away in feelings of attraction. When Ethan, a psychopath with a thirst for fear, fixates on her, the emotional impact could be lethal.

Caught in a deadly trap, Jade must untangle the emotions and find a way to use her empathic curse to overcome this killer or be overcome by him.

Shona's review 3 of 5 stars

Writing this review has me torn because I just don't know how I'm supposed to pin it down to a star rating. In some ways I really enjoyed the story and was able to lose myself in it, but in other ways it felt flat and predictable. Once we had met all the main players in the book I had a very good idea as to the way the rest of the book would play out. Which did spoil it a little for me, but I honestly don't know how Campbell could have avoided this. This book is set in our world, so not filled with supernaturals, yet in this one book we have not one, but five people who exhibit some extra sense/ability/gift, call it what you will. And two of them are related. Granted both their 'gifts' where activated following accidents but still...

Cam felt 'off' for me. One minute we are hearing how Jade finds him so easy to be around because his emotions are so controlled and calm (though not like Logan's), the next she is so overwhelmed by his passion and lust that she is practically jumping his bones. Then when she tries to explain her gift, this guy who until now comes across as caring and supportive suddenly doesn't listen enough to understand what she's saying and then when he does he shuts down and walks out.

Logan also hit a nerve, while I liked him (slightly) more than I liked Cam. He blew hot and cold so often I was getting whiplash trying to keep up. I honestly thought that once Jade found out his secret that he would open up to her more but nope he ran away. Repeatedly.

Even Ethan left me wanting. I get that this is a Young Adult novel, but he wasn't much of a bad guy, the few scenes we get of him being 'evil' are not exactly filled with horror. My mistake, this is written up as New Adult...

Overall I felt the story was a good one, it definitely drew me in and kept me engaged throughout. Touches nicely on the less than positive side of being an Empath and walks us through how difficult Jade's life must have been growing up and through all of this she still tries to forge friendships.
