Caught in a realm between life and death, Jade is torn between the unexpected love of a stranger, or catching the people who killed her.

With the clock ticking, she struggles to find a way to save the life of her best friend while holding on to the man that she loves.

One decision might leave her stranded in limbo for all of eternity, yet the other could destroy her happiness

Claire's Review 5 of 5 Stars

Wow what can I say about this book! I had me hooked from the very beginning. The beginning was extremely emotional and kept me from putting the book down! it was well written and the emotions you felt for the characters were so strong!

Full of interesting twists this book kept you on the edge of your seat and wanting to know more! I will definitely be looking at the rest of the Broken series in the future and will be looking out for more of the authors work!

Lisa's Review - 4 out of 5 stars

I was almost halfway through reading Love You More when I realised Claire had already reviewed it, but I was enjoying it so much I needed to add a review too!

When the author sent me the book, she warned me that the first chapter was heart wrenching. But I was in no way prepared for what I was hit with, it was hard hitting, emotional, shocking stuff, that was so well written. I realise that makes it sound a little scary, but it isn't at all, and I don't want to put people off with that, but if anything I would just advise you have a tissue at the ready!

After Jade is murdered and her best friend lays in a coma, and especially after the opening of the book, you will Jade on so hard to be able to help her loved ones find her murderers so that her spirit can move on and rest. With the quirky Ella being the only one that can see her and help her, it is a real page turner to see if they can succeed.

I usually pride myself on being able to 'suss' out a storyline plot or twist, either in book or film form, and I tend to take a little secret pleasure in finding out that I am right. With Love You More, there was more than twist that made the story even better that I hold my hands up to and can admit I did not see coming!

I couldn't give this book a 5 star review, as much as I enjoyed it. There are two reasons for this, the first being that when Jade meets Ella, I instantly got a picture of Whoopi Goldberg In Ghost, and after that I struggled to shake that out of my head as much as I tried! Secondly, the ending of the book felt so rushed, there was a blossoming relationship that developed pretty quickly, and I felt it needed more. I know there is another book to come in this series, so I am hoping it will be stretched out a bit more in the next one.

Belong to you/Made for you pre release review

Belong To You (Cole, #1)Belong To You by Vi Keeland

Book Synopsis:

My honeymoon was almost everything I dreamed it would be, a tropical paradise, turquoise water, romantic walks on the beach, and loads and loads of mind shattering sex. The only thing missing was the groom.

After seven years of coasting through a relationship with Michael, my senses were numb. A week of passion with a stranger was just what I needed to clear my head and take back control of my life. But how do you move on when the man who was only supposed to be a fling somehow seeps into your soul and steals your heart?

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

Let me start by saying this was a comfortable read, I actually read most of the book in one sitting, if I had started reading slightly earlier in the day I wouldn't have needed to stop for a sleep break. Pesky sleeping habits. The story unfolded at a nice pace, not too fast but at the same time we weren't bogged down with lots of back story either.

On the surface I enjoyed Syd and Jacks interactions, their holiday fling was steamy and I'm sure it's what a lot of single people fantasize about when they go on holiday. I enjoyed the '10 questions' aspect of the relationship they used so that they would still remain strangers but could get to know each other a little. But from the very beginning I wasn't completely taken by Jack, he was always a little too domineering, possessive and aggressive for someone who was involved in a holiday fling. And if I'm honest I was more than a little pissed at Syd for allowing him to be like this.. especially after he shut her out after an awkward conversation. And even more so when they first meet up again after the holiday.

This actually became a big thing for me whilst reading, I wanted to relax into the relationship and be swept along with Syd's feelings but at every turn I had Jack acting like a huge ass every time a guy so much as looked at Syd. This is the only reason I have rated this 4 stars instead of 5. I know for some this über Alpha male routine is a huge turn on but for me its definite turn off.

Made for You (Cole, #2)Made for You

Book Synopsis:

Jack and Syd spent a week in paradise. It was only supposed to be a fling. But life can be funny sometimes, and circumstances brought them back together again. Together they seemed to have found their happy ever after. But when Sydney is offered a chance at the career she has always wanted, she must leave Jack behind to follow her dreams. Can their love survive long distance? Sydney’s touring with a man every woman wants, but he only has eyes for Syd. And an unexpected tragedy leaves Jack feeling remorseful. Can the two find a way through to forever?

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

I  must be honest and admit that I read another book between Belong to you and Made for you, Jack struck me as such an ass that i needed a little break from him. Once I got started on this it was easy to slip back into Syd's head,  which shows how well Keeland has written her characters. Jack is still an ass, but I found myself liking him more in this book, despite the fact that he isn't actually there for a lot of it. He is still possessive, but for the majority of the book his 'possessiveness' comes across as caring, concerned and protective. Which I do find to be endearing qualities..

Syd is rather inexperienced in the bedroom department of their relationship, something that wasn't always evident during their sexploits in the first book, but in this instalment we get to see a little of her insecurities at her lack of sexual experience, especially considering Jacks business and sexual history. The sex scenes in this book are just as steamy as the first.. some of the scenes more so than others.... but I refuse to tell which ones ;-)

This was a 'easy to sink into, difficult to step away from' read, luckily my kids were entertaining each other so didn't require help from me giving me plenty of reading time.

Indiscretion pre-release review

Indiscretion By Charles Dubow

IndiscretionRelease date 4th July 2013

Book Synopsis

Harry and Madeleine Winslow are blessed with talent, money, and charm. Harry is an award–winning author on the cusp of greatness. Madeleine is a woman of sublime beauty and grace whose elemental goodness belies a privileged upbringing. Bonded by deep devotion, their marriage is both envied and admired by friends who spend summers at their East Hampton idyll.

When a holiday fling turns disastrously wrong, 26-year-old Claire falls into the Winslows’ welcoming orbit. They are enchanted by her youth and intelligence. In turn, Claire is entranced by Harry and Maddy. The love that exists between them is something of which, until now, she could only dream.

Seen through the omniscient eyes of Maddy's childhood friend Walter, a narrator akin to Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby, Indiscretion is a story about the complexities of love, the dangerous nature of desire and how obsession can tear apart even the most perfect of worlds.
Thanks to Harper Collins who provided copies in exchange for an honest review.

Claire's Review 3.5 of 5 Stars

Indiscretion was a very different book to what I'm used to reading. The biggest difference was with how it was told, using Walter to tell the story rather than through the eyes of one of the main characters. This was incredibly well done however I found it difficult to read to begin with as I felt it was hard to have an connection to the characters, and I felt no emotion for them. Walters narrative felt very invasive to me, on the verge of obsession over others lives.

Onto the story I felt the concept was very good, I was disappointed Harry gave in so easily to Claire's advances, which made me wonder if maybe Harry and Maddy's marriage wasn't as perfect as it was portrayed. I felt myself disliking Claire a lot, it felt like she just went after Harry due to his profile in society and because she wanted a life similar to Maddy's, this view may have evolved from the disconnection i felt from the characters. I spent a lot of the time reading this, wishing Maddy would give Walter a chance, and that she would get over Harry, I never expected the turn that the book took!

The emotional twist that happened felt like a punch in the chest! Being a wife and a mother I kept imagining how I would feel in Maddy's shoes. This is the only point I felt I connected with a character, as I could imagine and sympathise with the pain Maddy was feeling. I also warmed to Walter and how he cared so much for Maddy that he would give up so much just to be there for her.

Overall I enjoyed reading this. The story was heavy hitting and didn't follow convention with a predictable ending. I just wish I could have been able to have felt more of a connection with the characters, especially at the beginning as the first few chapters I found slow, however as the book progress I found it hard to put down!

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

The first thing that struck me about this book is the rather unique telling of the tale. The story itself intrigued me but I worried that the telling from Walter's point of view would leave holes in the story making it difficult for the reader to follow Harry and Claire's relationship. I needn't have worried because Walter tells this story beautifully. From almost the beginning of the story it felt like a comfortable chat with an old friend.

Did I like the characters? In the beginning I did. I didn't feel that Claire and Harry interacted very much in the beginning of the book before the affair, she seems to spend more time with Maddy, though you definitely get the impression that Claire's attraction to him is building. I admired Harry resisting Claire's advances the night she declared her feelings for him, I'm sure he chalked it up to excess alcohol. When they meet up a little while later though I was kind of disappointed that he succumbed so easily to her. Though, surprisingly, I was keen to see how their relationship would develop. There was a part of me that really wanted Harry to leave Maddy and make a new life with Claire, and there was a part of me that felt incredibly sorry for Claire because she deserved better than Harry was giving her.

Towards the end of the book I started to really dislike Harry. He claimed to want his wife and marriage back, but he still wanted to string Claire along. A perfect example of wanting his cake and eating it. I think if Maddy had at that point forgiven him he would have gone back home to her, but would still have continued his affair with Claire. I was pleased when Claire made the decision to walk away.

I'm trying really hard to write this spoiler free and because of that I think this is the longest it has taken me to write a review. There is a point in the book where I felt like I had been punched in the gut. If I had been standing up when I read this part of the book I swear my knees would have crumbled and I would have hit the floor. For the first time in the story I felt a real connection to Maddy and her pain became my pain. While this story may not have had the outcome I was hoping for (and as I learned how selfish Harry really was I started to hope that he ended up with neither of the women) I felt Dubow gave us a worthy ending.

This is the story of love, friendship and betrayal. There are no winners, only those who survived but where never really able to live fully again.

About the author

Charles Dubow was born in New York City and lived in the Upper East Side for most of his childhood. Summers were spent with artists and painters, hosting dinner parties and canoeing trips at the family home on Georgica Pond in the Hamptons. After graduating from both Wesleyan and New York University, Charles lived in London and Rome with a view to pursuing his dream of writing, and wrote several unpublished novels. Frustrated by lack of success, he went to work in the magazine industry, and became a founding editor at Forbes.com and later an editor at Businessweek.com. In 2008 however, he decided to give writing one last try. Indiscretion is his first novel, but it's been knocking about his brain for years.Charles lives in New York City with his wife Melinda, children William and Lally, and a labrador retriever named Luke. He is available for comment and to write features.

A Conversation with Charles Dubow

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind Indiscretion?

I first had the idea back in 1997 when I started working at Forbes.com. My family had a house on Georgica Pond in East Hampton and we would have great weekend house parties. I lived in an old converted barn on the property and we would cram in our friends, many of whom were also just starting out. They didn't have weekend homes of their own and , like us, some had very young children. There was canoeing and croquet and tennis and trips to the beach. At night we'd grill steaks and get drunk on the back porch and watch the sunset. It was a very happy time, It's all gone now. The house is sold and I no longer go out to that part of the world but I miss it. I wanted to write something that would capture some of that magic. But there's no drama, no tension in that. So I needed something. It's a basic riff on Adam and Eve's ejection from Eden. ut the snake in my book wasnt offering knowledge, at least not in so many words, but rather something even more tempting, such as sex and the recapturing of one's youth.

What was the most challenging aspect of tackling your first novel?

The hardest part was really finding the time and the discipline to write every day. I almost never had a problem knowing what I was going to write. I suppose I'd been letting the book gestate and stew inside of me for so long that I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted when I actually sat down.

Indiscretion has four main characters: Harry and Maddy, the glamorous couple; Claire, the personable new addition to Harry and Maddy's life; and Walter, the affable family friend. It is Walter who tells the story of Harry, Maddy and Claire as a second-hand account. Why is that?

When I had finished it and began showing the manuscript to people, I got a lot of readers saying thow it made them think of Nick Carraway in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. What probably happened is that I internalized that process simply by just rereading that book so many times over the course of my life. But that was all subconscious. Consciously, I wanted a strong voice that would be able to tell the story of Harry, Maddy and Claire from an engaged and hardly dispassionate third-person point of view. I knew that a story told from one of the three main protagonists would be even more biased and I wanted the warmth that only a third person narrative can provide.

What I found interesting - and this was only a realization I had once I had completed the manuscript - was that Walter and Harry are really both sides of me, my yin and my yang, my id and super ego, if you will. On the one hand, I have always shared Walters sense of responsibility and propriety, traits engendered in me by my upbringing and parentage, but on the other I have also always had Harry's artistic and unconventional side.

Without giving away too many spoilers, can you tell us how different the final product is from what you originally set out to write?

I had originally thought of making the ending happier, but as the story evolved I realized that it couldn't end that way - and still be satisfying. What remained constant was my desire to write about a life I knew that revolved around real people. I find too many books these days feature characters that are too extreme, not to mention unrealistic. I understand a writer's fascination with creating unique, quirky characters but at the same time it can be hard to relate to them. The people in my book could b e someone you could sit next to at a dinner party - they might seem normal, well-adjusted, etc., but who knows what us really gong on in their lives, what demons haunt them. We all have that. Human beings are already complicated enough.

What would you like readers to take away from Indiscretion?

The message I want most to convey to readers is to always remember the important things in our lives,: love, family, friendship. It sounds obvious, but too often we compromise what matters the most.

Playing Tyler review

Playing TylerPlaying Tyler by T L Costa

Book Synopsis:

Tyler MacCandless can’t focus, even when he takes his medication. He can’t focus on school, on his future, on a book, on much of anything other than taking care of his older brother, Brandon, who’s in rehab for heroin abuse… again.

Tyler’s dad is dead and his mom has mentally checked out. The only person he can really count on is his Civilian Air Patrol Mentor, Rick. The one thing in life it seems he doesn’t suck at is playing video games and, well, that's probably not going to get him into college.

Just when it seems like his future is on a collision course with a life sentence at McDonald’s, Rick asks him to test a video game. If his score’s high enough, it could earn him a place in flight school and win him the future he was certain that he could never have. And when he falls in love with the game’s designer, the legendary gamer Ani, Tyler thinks his life might finally be turning around.

That is, until Brandon goes MIA from rehab and Tyler and Ani discover that the game is more than it seems. Now Tyler will have to figure out what’s really going on in time to save his brother… and prevent his own future from going down in flames.

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars.

I will put my hands up and admit that my desire to read this book was based solely on the cover and increased hype on Strange Chemistry's Facebook page. Every time I logged into Facebook I would be greeted by this cover and the more I saw it the more I wanted to read it. When I was offered an ARC of this I jumped at the chance. So thank you Netgalley and Strange Chemistry.

The first chapter from Tyler's point of view was... uncomfortable. It took me a few re-reads to get used to his inner monologue, but after that first chapter it wasn't an issue. Tyler himself was instantly likeable. As was Ani, she isn't your typical love interest. This girl has her own story to tell , her own life to live and her own insecurities to deal with when it comes to meeting boys. All too often in books with a romantic edge to them we get one super confident character and the other is usually really shy and awkward and unsure of the other persons feelings. In Playing Tyler we get two people who are really confident at what they do, but incredibly awkward with each other and unsure how the other is thinking or feeling. The build up of their romance was well written.

The only issue I had with this was how early I saw the twist coming. But honestly it doesn't spoil the enjoyment of the book. I know how cliché this sounds, but Playing Tyler is a real page turner, I found myself at stupid o'clock in the morning with my eyes hanging out of my head while I continued to read, refusing to put it down so I could sleep.

KC knows the affair is a bad idea, but she just can’t help herself. Emma is KC’s exception, the one woman she loves enough to not have sex with. When Emma confesses that she’s loved KC since high school, KC is terrified. One wrong move and she could lose Emma completely.

Is she willing to let her family pay the price for her good time? Or will she turn to Emma to discover the true meaning of love and devotion?

Shona's review  4 of 5 stars

This is the first female/female romance I have read. I may not be able to compare it to other F/F books but I can compare it to other romance novels and this definitely measures up. The sex scenes in this book are rather steamy and very explicit. There's no build up either, the book opens and we instantly have a sex scene.. followed by another just a few pages later. Initially I worried that it would be a book filled with sex scenes simply because it could be, but it quickly became more than that.. Which is why I read this book in one sitting.

KC's relationship with Lonnie is like many male/female relationships I have read in other books. Typically Lonnie's character would be the male of the relationship, the one who picks up the girl, gets what he wants and discards her until he's ready for his next fix. When we first meet KC she is starting to get annoyed with this aspect of her 'relationship' with Lonnie, always at her beck and call and never able to call the shots about the where and when herself.

Although KC has been 'out' for several years, Love and Devotion is very much her journey of self-discovery. She realises that she is worth more than her relationship with Lonnie, she discovers the type of person she wants to be with and she makes changes in her own self to make sure that she can achieve that.
Author Bio:

Jove Belle was born and raised against a backdrop of orchards and potato fields. The youngest of four children, she was raised in a conservative, Christian home and began asking why at a very young age, much to the consternation of her mother and grandmother. At the customary age of eighteen, she fled southern Idaho in pursuit of broader minds and fewer traffic jams involving the local livestock. The road didn’t end in Portland, Oregon, but there were many confusing freeway interchanges that a girl from the sticks was ill-prepared to deal with. As a result, she has lived in the Portland metro area for over fifteen years and still can’t figure out how she manages to spend so much time in traffic when there’s not a stray sheep or cow in sight.

She lives with her partner of twelve years. Between them they share three children, two dogs, two cats, two mortgage payments, one sedan, and one requisite dyke pickup truck. One day she hopes to live in a house that doesn’t generate a never ending honey-do list.

Incidentally, she never stopped asking why, but did expand her arsenal of questions to include who, what, when, where and, most important of all, how. In those questions, a story is born.

Genre: Contemporary New Adult

The first time I ever saw Caden Harper I’m pretty sure I fell in love.
All that golden hair and pale blue eyes. He was mysterious and covered in paint. I found it endearing and wanted nothing more than to find out all his secrets. I gave that man things I would never give anyone else. He blew it though. Which I shouldn’t be surprised considering he is a womanizer.
So I moved on, well kind of. Jaden Harper wasn’t what I expected. I found myself drawn to him all most as much as his brother. Maybe it’s the fact they are twins or maybe it was the fact I wanted to live on the wrong side for once in my life.
Now I’ve found myself dug deep in this game. Theres no end in sight and I wonder when all the lies I have told will come back to haunt me. Neither man should know the things I’ve gone through. Neither should trust me. I’m not who I say I am. My past is full of things I won’t ever share. But where will that lead me when Caden wants nothing more than to consume me? He won’t wake up to see he has the wrong kind of love.

Booky Ramblings Interview with Bryony Pearce

Welcome to Booky Ramblings, Bryony, and thank you for taking the time to do this interview!

1. What inspired you to write your first book?

My first book was never published.  It was called Windrunner’s Daughter and was about a futuristic, patriarchal society in which a girl wants to do the same job as her father and brothers.  I was inspired by Anne Macaffrey’s character work and by the desire to promote a belief in equality  among younger readers.  I wanted young girls to read about Web and say, ‘I can do that too’.    I still believe that Windrunner has a place and have recently rewritten it.

2. Do you have a specific writing style?

I have been told that my writing is distinctive.  While my subject matter varies wildly (from sci-fi to paranormal romance, to thriller to contemporary realism) my editor can always tell that it is my work.  I write descriptively, vividly (these are not my words by the way), I have a distinctive voice.  I also include large mythic themes (gods and monsters) in everything I write, my main characters are always struggling with the darkness inside them, I always explore good and evil and key themes are freedom and redemption.

3. Which of your novels have influenced your life the most?

Angel’s Fury was the first novel I had published (with Egmont).  Going through the whole process I learned so much, I made great friends and I saw my book on shelves.  I started doing school visits and writing workshops, which teach me as much as I impart.  I won an award and am up for another one next week (as I write this, that will be over by the time you read it).  In response to the question, what do you do?  It allowed me to say (with great pride) I am a writer.

4. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

In terms of personal development I always loved and imitated Anne Macaffrey.  She was the writer I wanted to be when I grew up.  But in terms of practical help along the way, Sarwat Chadda has always been a friend, offering advice and support.

5. What book are you reading now?

I just finished Nalini Singh Hostage to Pleasure and am about to start Tom Winter’s Lost and Found.  I’ve had it for a while but have been putting it off because I’m worried that it will make me cry.

6. What are your current projects?

I am writing a sci-fi novel that is currently called Wavefunction.  It is based on Homer’s Odyssey and multi-universe theory, and is about a young man who discovers that he can jump between the different universes created by decisions.  I am waiting for edits to come back on the first draft so  have started a teen superhero novel, which I am quite excited about and considering getting illustrated.  Also I am bringing up two children.  They are definitely works in
progress.

7. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

No.  I always wanted to be a writer.  My earliest memories have me planning to be a novelist when I grew up.  I took a couple of detours, but I got here in the end.

8. What was the first book you remember reading as a child/teen/adult?

I remember a book called Aristide.  I used to make my mum read it over and over again.  Also Wind in the Willows.  I read that to my daughter while I was pregnant with her.  I love the lyricism of it.

9.If you could master any other art form what would it be?

Painting.  I dabble amateurishly and am seriously considering doing a more serious course once the children are grown.  I had a modicum of talent as a teenager (I recall my art teacher hounding me through the school trying to get me to do A level but to her horror I chose to do maths instead).  After that I didn’t touch it for years.   I occasionally draw or paint when I have the time, but would love to be able to do it properly.

10. Do you have any superstitions when writing?

Not really.  I don’t have time to for superstitions.  With two young children I just have to get down and write whenever I have a spare half hour.

11. Do you read all your reviews? How do you react to a negative review?

I admit it, I do read all my reviews.  I even look on Goodreads, which is guaranteed to send any author completely insane (for  the Weight of Souls I already have one three star rating which was put up before I’d even finished writing the book – see, crazy-making).

But I value every review.  I value the fact that someone has taken the time and energy to write down their thoughts about my work.  I appreciate the effort, the time it takes to put it all online,  the sense that they care.  Even reviewers who write negative things (and thank goodness there haven’t been many of those so far) care enough about literature to write about my work.  The only way to respect that effort is to take the time to read the reviews myself.

Negative reviews are upsetting, of course they are.  But the absolute last thing I do is reply to them.  I remind myself that everyone is entitled to an opinion and that perhaps they forgot to take their meds that day (only kidding).

12. What snacks/drinks do you keep on hand when writing?

I do like a cup of tea to start the writing process off, but to be honest, once I’m in the zone the tea generally goes cold.  I don’t have snacks (I’m watching my ever
expanding waistline) but I do treat myself with chocolate at the end of a chapter.  This is why my chapters tend to be short!

13. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Letting someone else read it.  I’m a pretty private person and opening myself up for that kind of criticism was very difficult.

14. Do you have any advice for other writers?

Be stubborn.  Don’t stop writing.  You can’t fail if you never give up.

15. Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Alright, but it is unedited and rough.  No-one has read this yet, but me. Be gentle dear reader.

This is the first thousand words of ‘Blood Skies’ (my teen superhero WIP).

It was 12.30 in the afternoon and the sky above Manchester was black.  Not the black of a lowering cloud heavy with the promise of snow.  It was summer after all.  It was the black of a nest of spiders.  Pitch black in the centre, a colour so dense that it sucked in the gaze and made sparks burn in the corner of your eyes, then lighter at the edges, but roiling with tendrils, like frantic legs reaching and fighting to be free.

The whole pulsed, sometimes it condensed into a globe that hovered above Urbis, often it exploded wider, enveloping the city limits and reaching for the trembling Peaks.

Valerie watched in endless fascination.  She should have been sick with horror at what the skies promised for the future.  But as she wasn’t sure she had a future, she could simply allow herself to watch the myriad patterns in the distant battle for the soul of the earth and be fascinated by the changing darkness in the skies.

Her mother had stepped out, dragging the doctor with her.  As if Val wasn’t old enough to hear anything she had to say.  She would have strained her ears and tried to listen in, but it all seemed like too much effort.  She was just so tired.  So she simply lay and stared out of the window, feeling the insistent tug of the plastic tubing that tickled her nose and listening to the quiet beep of the machines that surrounded her; a symphony to match the pulsing blackness.

Like a tornado her mother re-entered the room.  Val knew she tried to be quiet and that she had developed, over the years, a way of moving that belied her size and exuberant intensity, but still she managed to absorb all the air in a room; every eye, every scrap of attention.  Even Val flicked her eyes away from the blackness to watch her sit down.

The Consultant hovered at the end of the bed; a man well used to power and responsibility squashed into a recalcitrant schoolboy by her mother’s disapproval.  Val smiled tiredly.  Her mother’s mouth was a moue of censure and sour condemnation.  She must have chewed him out.

Her mother’s face softened and she took Val’s hand, turning it over as usual and tracing her life-line with the pad of her finger.  On her mother’s wrist a tattoo stood proud red and black: a heart, broken down the middle and held together with safety pins.  Val’s heart.

“Did you hear any of that?”  Her mother murmured.  Val gave the slightest shake of her head.  Her eyes were already too heavy to hold open.  Her mother’s gentle stroking and giant presence made her even more tired.

Through cracked eyes she saw her mother glare at Mr Kayson.  “We’ve been here before.  You promised us thirty years.”

“I am sorry Mrs Alard.  The repair offered by the Fontan operation does average fifteen to thirty years.  Valerie has been very unlucky.”

“Unlucky?”  Her mother choked and the consultant held up his hands.

“Sometimes the Fontan fails, it was all explained to you thirteen years ago, but I’ll go through it with you once more if you would like me to.”

“She was three.  What were we going to do?”

“I understand.”

“So now we can only wait for a transplant.”  She stroked her other hand through Val’s hair, short against her cheeks, easier to deal with when she was exhausted.  Wash and go hair.  “What are our chances?”

Val was drifting now, sinking down to the bottom of a deep well.  Her mother’s voice came from a long way away, Mr Kayson was a blur at the top, framed by the call of sleep.

“Val isn’t at the top of the list, Mrs Alard.  There are a couple of other children in even more dire straits.  But she’s near the top.  We’ll let you know as soon as anything changes.  In the meantime we’ll be monitoring the situation.  Val’s strong, she’s a fighter.  We’re all pulling for her.”

“I don’t want you to pull for her.  I want you to give her a heart.”  Her mother’s fingers stilled.  Val was almost gone and she sensed that more stroking might disturb her slumber.  “It was her leavers’ dance today.  Her prom.  She had a dress picked out months ago…”

And that was image Val took with her into sleep.

The dress was midnight blue.  Val knew that most of the other girls would be wearing black.  Black was slimming and sophisticated, aspirational.  But she wanted blue.  Dark blue to match her eyes and complement her hair, which was what she thought of as red-orange, but her mother called deep-bronze, or sometimes autumn chestnut, as if she was a sales person, creating colourant out of her tangled waves.

She’d heard the others talking, they were either going for mini-skirts or calf length cocktail dresses, sourced from the Trafford Centre on days out with cinema and lattes to finish.  Val’s dress was from a boutique in Wilmslow.  A maxi dress, it skimmed the floor.  It would hide any oedema on her ankles and swish as she walked in her low heels.  It had a Grecian style drape at the front, which flattered her thin frame, but would also hide the swelling on her stomach and there were chiffon arms that would cover her to the elbow in case of any more unsightly bulges.  The dress was cut high at the front, to cover her scar, but low at the back.  The other girls would show boob or leg.  Val would pin up her short hair and show the elegant lines of her neck and the beauty of the curves of her spine; unscarred, unswollen, touchable.

Her mum had bought her dangling crystal earrings and sparkling pins made of Swarovski crystal for her hair.  Her cousin was coming over from Buxton to do her make-up.

Next to the other girls she would always look different, abnormal, but this time … this time she would stand out in a good way.  She would shine and sparkle and make their mini-skirts look try-hard and inappropriate.

Ryan would glance at her and realise that she was the only real girl in the class; the only one worth spending time with.  Their eyes would meet and he would hold out his hand for her to come and dance.

There would be slow music, a tempo she could move to without losing her breath.  They would step across the floor, smoothly, past the other girls whose stares would burn with jealousy.  He would hold her, with one hand gently on the small of her back, slightly bunching her dress, his fingertips skimming the naked skin of her vertebrae and making her shiver.

“You’re so special.”  He would whisper it in her ear, his breath warming her lobes.  Tendrils of her hair would have escaped the pins, he would push them back gently, lingering over her cheeks bones, staring into her eyes.  Then he would lean down for a kiss and they would stop dancing, even as the music played on.

Excerpt:

My lucky stars must’ve aligned in my alternate universe. The mystery goddess was catching rays and reading on her eReader on her front lawn. Bookworm? Girls I used to date only read fashion and gossip rags. Her gazed alighted on me, zipped away, head bowed as if she were studying her purple toenails. I climbed out of the Lexus, practicing my most suave moves. My disjointed efforts backfired big time as my knee buckled and I banged my arm on the open door catching my balance. Stars flickered in my vision as I rubbed my elbow.

“School out already?” Her voice carried to me, sultry and hot enough to melt chocolate. The breeze tousled her hair and she made no attempt to smooth it down.

Wow. My tongue got all tied up for the first time ever. I wanted my initial words to be epic. Stupid Epic refused to emerge from the brain sludge. I strolled over to where she sat Indian style on the new lawn in a loose black T-shirt and baggy cargo shorts. “I need to meet the tow to snag my car.”

“Bummer about your Camaro.” Lacking any grace, she stumbled to her feet, brushing grass off the rear of her white shorts, seeming not to care about grass stains. Most girls I knew would’ve beelined it for the closet. Strangely, I liked that she didn’t care. “I’m Tara Harrison,” she added. She sipped green gunk out of a clear plastic cup.

Her name jingled a distant bell. Dad probably mentioned the family to me during my Summer of Delirium—in honor of Silver, my moniker for the worst summer of my life. The parentals used to visit my hospital room and babble about nothing. The pits of despair kept me from remembering much.

My gaze traveled from Tara’s bare feet to her blonde-streaked brunette hair. Weird flutters plagued my stomach. A freakishly intense need to move closer to her kept my feet rooted to the new sod in a fierce battle. “Lucas Alexander. I live next door.”

“I figured as much.”

Feeling the idiot gene sprout, I mentally kicked myself. We traded an easy laugh, and I resisted the urge to scratch my itchy facial scars.

“You have awesome eyes. Like spring grass.” A blush colored her neck, flushed down her chest.

“Uh, thanks.” Total moron reply. Man, everything had changed after the accident. My defective brain couldn’t keep up with the new Lucas Alexander.

“Do you play football?” A breeze kicked up, and Tara brushed a lock of glittery hair off her eyelashes.

Several disconcerted moments slipped by before I realized I wore my football team polo, the first shirt my hands snagged in the closet that morning. Regret radiated through me. I attempted to unclench my locked jaw. Time to bite the bullet. Beranger told me every time I discussed the tragedy, it’d get easier to tackle. Those hundred bucks an hour weren’t a total waste. That piece of advice was worth a bill.

“Used to,” I mumbled, honing in on a beetle crashing into the damp grass.

“Did I say—” Her eyes grew misty. “Oh, I’m sorry. The realtor told us about the . . . about what happened.”

I waved off her concern. “Where you guys from?”

Her full bottom lip trembled. Honestly, I was glad she’d heard the story. Saved me from having to download the gruesome details.

Alternate Connection Cover Reveal

ALTERNATE CONNECTION is the third novel in the COUNTERMEASURE SERIES.

The next installment of the COUNTERMEASURE SERIES has a tentative release date set for November 5th, 2013. The story continues where TO RUSSIA WITH LOVE left off and pursues a parallel between Trevor and Cassandra Bauer’s quest and a daring attack on US nationals.

AlternateConnection_72dpi_300BLURB

CIA operative Nathan Nelson has built his life on secrets. Secrets about events that have shaped him into the man he has become. Events that taught him to keep his shields up. He has kept them buried in the past and nobody—not even Cassandra Bauer, the woman he claimed to love—knows of them. Now, those secrets have come barreling down on him at the worst of times.

Foreign Service Specialist Rachael Moore's personal crusade puts her in the crosshairs of very dangerous people. She would risk everything to achieve her goal even if it means exposing her battered heart and deeply concealed dreams to a man who doesn’t know the meaning of love.

Unbeknownst to both, their reconnection may not only bridge the chasm between the two of them, but shed light on a puzzling mystery. Their perilous journey becomes a race for their lives, leading them into a conspiracy rooted deeper than the tangled emotions between them.

Will their collaboration shatter the tenuous link woven in the past or forge a bond they never expected could exist in the future?

EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 5

Nathan shook his head and pulled out the first folder containing the personal file of Gerald Blair, U.S. Envoy to the Middle East. The report was thorough and contained a detailed account of both his professional and personal life. He raised his eyes to Hanson. “Do you want to split’em?”

“Nope. I’m done with them. They are all yours.”

“When—?”

“While I waited for the fax. I’m a fast read, Nelson. Keep that in mind.” Hanson’s lips quirked in a cocky grin as he leaned his seat back and closed his eyes. His disheveled appearance and the hickeys decorating his neck a clear indication he needed some shut-eye. “Let me know when you’re done so we can discuss the details.”

Nathan sank in his own seat, his mind teeming with questions. Questions he didn’t think he would have answers to any time soon. He had a long analysis ahead of him considering he was also looking for pieces of a puzzle unknown to Hanson. Unlike Hanson’s, Nathan’s focus also encompassed the files belonging to the two agents and two drivers who’d been killed in the attack.

With that in mind, he returned his attention to the folder and began studying the first of the people they were supposed to know inside and out before they set off for ground zero. As he read through the pages, he looked for inconsistencies, hidden information, or activities that could have made Blair a target. Anything that could have put them all in the crosshairs of whoever had taken them.

The situation was more complex than the usual hostage kidnapping. While religious extremists were quick to claim responsibility, those who’d abducted the six remaining members of the diplomatic convoy two days earlier hadn’t made any demands through the media. They’d simply dropped off the radar as if they’d never been.

There had to be a reason for that divergence from the usual and that reason could very well be tied to Nathan’s prime directive. The answer could be in any of their past or present and, if he was to be successful, he had to find it.

He beat his way through Gerald Blair’s file and took notes as he moved through. Blair had been in extensive contact with Palestinians and Israelis—unavoidable contact since it was an integral part of his job to mediate peace in the region—and that in itself could have placed a target on his back.

Nathan set Blair’s file aside and moved on to the next in the bundle. As he flipped it open, his whole body stiffened in his seat. A buzzing noise flooded his ears, and his sight dimmed. His field of vision narrowed to the picture on the page and the name listed—Moore, Rachael. Status: Widow. Rae.

His blood iced in his veins. For a moment, he felt detached from reality expecting someone to pop up in the seat in front of him pointing a camera and screaming, “Gotcha!” He fixed his eyes on the file again. Phillip Moore’s wife. Was that why Hanson had made that comment about setting personal involvements aside? Nathan stared at her familiar image for a moment before diving in. Some of the information in it was known to him. Some was brand new. He read the declassified report on Phillip’s death with a heavy heart and the thumping in his chest rose to such a loud racket he thought it would wake Hanson from his beauty sleep.

The more he read about Rachael, the more his frown deepened. Why was she working at the embassy in Israel? How had she come to be assigned as a personal assistant to Blair?

Phillip had been crazy about her, and Nathan understood why as soon as he’d met her. At the time they met, she’d been working on a business associate degree with some difficulty due to the sudden transfer to the US. Neither had mentioned she dabbed in international politics back then. Had she made a career change after Phillip’s death? Guilt punched him in the gut and he held his breath, squeezing his eyes shut to keep self-flagellation at bay.

He’d gone through that cycle many times before. He wasn’t about to slide down that road again. If that was how he could redeem himself, he was going to take it.

Sapphire Universe Blog tour

Sapphire Universe

Sapphire Universe (The Universe Series, #1)Sapphire Universe by Devon Herrera

Goodreads Book: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17887015-sapphire-universe

Book Synopsis

Rule #1 Do NOT ignore the signs.
Rule #2 Pay attention.
Rule #3 The less they know about you, the harder it is for them to hurt you.
Rule #4 Comfort is dangerous. It can be taken away.
Rule #5 Need is a handicap. It can cripple you.
Rule #6 He isn’t what he seems. Don’t trust him.

Simple rules made for a simple purpose. Nina Ryan learned early on in life that if you want to avoid being hurt, you need to be proactive. If you pay attention the Universe will always steer you in the right direction. It will help keep you safe. So, she follows the rules, and she is safe. Until Connor Wright barges his way through all her carefully laid defenses and threatens to destroy the comfortable life she has created. Faithfully following her #1 rule, Nina tries to accept that the Universe has pushed Connor and her lives together for a purpose. Determined to make Nina his, Connor chips away at the walls Nina has placed around her heart and her secrets. Is Nina following the signs that will lead her down the right path, or does Connor hold secrets of his own that will ruin Nina for good? Only the Universe knows.

Shona's review 4 of 5 stars

Nina, although she's rather frosty with people, is instantly likeable. Nina is damaged in a way she doesn't even realise, she doesn't trust anyone except her best friend Lola and she definitely doesn't trust men. Until Connor forces himself into her life.

Connor is also instantly likeable, though admittedly if he sat next to me on the bus and asked the same questions he asked Nina I'd probably be just as short and sarcastic with him as she was. Although Nina admits to herself that she is attracted to Connor she does fairly well at holding him at arm's length. For a little while at least.

I do enjoy a good romance but the format for these books are usually pretty straightforward; girl meets boy, girl falls in love with boy, girl believes boy has betrayed her in some way, girl pushes boy away, time goes past and girl and boy meet up and make up and live happily ever after. Well imagine my surprise when I realise there is actually MORE to this story than the standard romance book.

This book is so easy to sink into, it's so well written that it's hard to believe that this is Herrera's first novel. If she can write something this enjoyable as her first attempt I look forward to reading what comes next.

About the Author:

6913170I am a wife of a U.S Army Soldier and mother of a beautiful little girl. I work for the Wyoming Department of Revenue in Cheyenne Wyoming, and no we don't still ride horses out here. I've been in love with reading since I first discovered the Harry Potter series in 4th grade. I don't just read a good book I devour it. After reading hundreds of novels I finally bit the bullet and sat down to write one of my own. I had an idea in my head and as soon as I started writing, the story seemed to play out right infront of me. Nothing has ever felt so natural. About 10 chapters into it I decided that I was going to take the plunge and get it self published as an Ebook. "Sapphire Universe" is a Contemporary Romance novel for adults, because lets face it, I'm female. Romance is what I like to read so it's what I'm going to write. I'll be posting some teasers and keeping you up to date on my progress as I finish writing and editing. Thank you so much for your support, and I can't wait for you to read "Sapphire Universe."

Excerpt

“I can’t have sex with you right now.” I blurt, eloquent as usual.

Connor raises his eyebrows and I can tell he’s trying to process this information. “Why do I get the feeling you’re not trying to tell me that it’s your time of the month.”

Now it’s my turn to be shocked. Nothing is off limits with this man. “Um...no its not.” I say embarrassed. “I wish it were that simple. I just want to wait till its right. It’s important to me to be sure it’s something I’m ready for and it’s a deal breaker.”

Connor takes a deep breath and reaches across the table for my hand. This is where the convincing starts. But baby, I just want to show you how much you mean to me. I promise it will only hurt for a second. You’re making this a big deal. It’s just sex. But when Connor speaks, it’s nothing like what Ricky said.

“Nina, I’m not going to lie and say I don’t want you, because I do. Desperately. But, that kiss you gave me earlier, I could live off those kisses. Actually, I’m sort of impressed.
Most girls these days are more eager than I am. As long as you let me kiss you and hold you and call you mine, I can wait for the rest. You call the shots on this Nina. Your rules, your pace. I meant it when I said I was patient. Especially when something is worth waiting for.”

Throw in an estranged mom, annoying new stepdad, and drooling baby half-brother, and it’s a disaster even her favorite cherry red leather jacket can’t fix. Even worse, there’s (hot) live-in research assistant Josh to contend with. The only thing more embarrassing than   drunk-kissing him hours after they meet? Knowing he’ll be witness to her family’s dysfunction all. summer. long.

But when Emma meets a mysterious girl who happens to be a Druid, her vacation suddenly promises to be far more intriguing than she  anticipated. Powerful rituals, new friends, an intoxicating sense of freedom...and Simon, the sexy foreign stranger she was hoping for. It’s all a perfect distraction from dirty diapers and awkward family dinners.

Trouble is, intriguing doesn’t often mean simple. And Emma is about to discover just how not simple her life really is.

By Blood is a novel about the ways that blood can bind us to others – or tear us apart.

Excerpt

Probably it was just lack of sleep and not the consumption of cider that made my heels skitter dangerously against the cobblestones as I tottered my way back towards the house. As I walked, my mind flickered aimlessly from thoughts of Colin’s wolfish grin to wondering if the graceful swashes of graffiti on the concrete wall I passed were Arabic. As hard as I tried, I couldn’t make myself concentrate on anything useful. Like walking straight. Or where I’d put my purse.I got halfway down the block before Josh caught up with me. “Hey, wait up,” he said and grabbed my arm when I stumbled a little.

“So did you punch him?” I giggled. If there had been a fight, I was glad Josh won. He kept his hand on my arm as we walked.

“What?” Josh asked.

For a second I couldn’t remember my question; I was too busy imagining Josh’s fist connecting with Colin’s too-pronounced jaw. Ha.

“You know, all that testosterone back there…” My hand reached over of its own accord and squeezed his bicep. “I thought we were going to have an international incident.” I’d never had a guy fight over me before. Not that Josh had fought over me. Not really. Though he’d had a protective vibe going on that was kind of hot. Not that I thought he was hot. Well, I did, but—

Suddenly my heel caught on the edge of a brick and my ankles wobbled. Josh tightened his grip on me and I tried not to lean on him too heavily as he led me forward.

“Jeez. You don’t hold your liquor very well. Are you okay?” He really did have beautiful eyes: clear cobalt blue with dark rings around the irises.

“It’s not like I’ve had a lot of practice,” I replied. “And yes, I’m fine. It’s just my shoes.”

“Not just. But I see your point. Those heels look lethal.”

There was something sexy about a guy who could appreciate my death-defying footwear. I flicked the boot’s stiletto heel in his direction, showing off a little. And teetered. My arms flailed and my elbow made contact with some portion of Josh’s anatomy. He grunted and I wobbled more. Oh crap. I was going down. Even worse, another of my ridiculous giggles spewed out. Just my luck I’d be the silly giggling girl with a broken ankle.

Before I could do real damage, though, Josh caught me, strong hands on my waist. He held me close, chest to breasts, until I was steady again on my feet, and then let his hands move to my wrists, a final reassurance that I wasn’t going to go toppling over.

My eyes trailed downward, drawn by the pressure of his hands on my arms, and widened when I saw a small sparkly box hanging from his wrist.

“My purse!” I exclaimed with relief.

He hastily handed it to me, as if he’d just remembered that he’d been carrying a lady’s purse around. “Oh yeah. I figured you’d be wanting that.”

I threw my arms around his neck, my exuberance knocking him back a step. “Thank you so much. You just saved my life. Seriously!”

Before my brain had a chance to catch up to my body, which was reveling in the feel of his warm, steadying hands on my waist, I stretched up to give him an enthusiastic kiss on the cheek. And somehow made contact with his lips.

I didn’t even have time to close my eyes and enjoy it.

“Whoa, whoa there.” His hands fell from my sides as if I’d burned him, and he took a big step back. “It was no problem. Really.” He reached out, without moving any closer, and gave me an awkward, brotherly pat on the arm. “I think we need to get you home. I didn’t realize one drink would be such a big deal for you.”

Oh no. What was I thinking? I stood frozen, mouth open.

Josh walked a few steps, but when he saw that I wasn’t following he paused.

“Come on, Emma.” His eyes were shadowed, hiding his expression.

I didn’t want to follow him. I wanted slink to the ground and slither away, find a hole somewhere, someplace where I could die of embarrassment.
