Other Side of Forever Blog Tour

Other Side of ForeverOther Side of Forever by Shannon Eckrich

Book Synopsis:

Seventeen-year-old Allie Anderson's telekinetic powers are anything but useful--she can't bring her father back, can't stop her mother's downward spiral into alcohol, and can't keep her from falling in love with Ethan Bradley. Loving Ethan is easy, but it comes with a hefty price: Ethan is prohibited by his people from interacting with mortals--because he isn't mortal himself. When Allie and Ethan's love is discovered, there's someone who will do anything to keep them apart. If Allie can't learn to control her powers and fight to save Ethan, this dark entity will make every attempt to stop her beating heart. And if that happens, not even the energy of an immortal can bring her back.

Shona's Review 4 of 5 stars

Allie isn't your every day average teenager. Since her dad walked out on her and her mum when she was 10 she has been exhibiting telekinetic powers. When she trashes her room her mum refuses to accept she did it with powers so she doesn't tell anyone else. She spends the next 7 years trying to keep a lid on her emotions so that she can keep others from finding out what she can do. Allie grows up living with a mother who never got over the loss of her husband leaving her which has left her bitter and turning to alcohol to numb the pain. On more than one occasion she leaves Allie to fend for herself. All this has taught Allie that she can't rely on anyone for anything. Until she meets Ethan.

Considering all that Allie has been through she remains strong, there is no self-pitying teenager here. She hides her hurt from the few friends she has, trusting only her oldest friend Jeremy, but still never fully honest with him. Yet when she meets Ethan she unloads everything. She is finally able to trust. Even when Ethan is taken from her she still finds the inner strength to fight for him, to try to be the one who saves him.

Shannon Eckrich has written an engaging story with characters we can relate to. While we may not all have grown up and experienced the same problems Allie has, it isn't too difficult to imagine ourselves in her shoes. The story is well written and unfolds at a nice pace. The ending is not what I was expecting at all, too often YA books have the predictable ending but Eckrich avoids.

Hello Shannon, Welcome to Booky Ramblings, thank you for joining us today.

1. What was the first book you remember reading as a child/teen/adult?
The first book I remember reading is IT by Stephen King. I think that's why I always leave the lights on at night now. That clown seriously freaked me out. I'm also scared of storm drains.

2. What do you listen to whilst writing?
I only listen to music during my rough drafts. It gives me the inspiration I need. I listen to a bit of everything. Rock music is awesome for my fight scenes.

3. Do you think your writing style is affected by the type of music/background noise you
listen to?
Not at all. My writing style is the same whether I listen to music or not.

4. If you could master any other art form what would it be?
Singing. I can't sing worth crap.

5. Do you have any superstitions when writing?
Not at all.

6. Do you read all your reviews? How do you react to a negative review?
Yes, I read all my reviews and like the review. It takes a lot of time for bloggers to read books and review them. I shrug off the negative reviews. Every one has a different opinion. I don't like all best selling novels, so I don't expect everyone to like what I write.

7. What snacks/drinks do you keep on hand when writing?
Mmm . . . beef jerky and Pepsi are a must.

8. What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Don't worry what other people say about your writing. Do what you love to do and never give up.

9. Have you always wanted to be an author?
Actually, no. I basically woke up one day after reading the Twilight saga and decided I wanted to write my own book.

If you have enough time I would love for you to answer some of our random questions.

1. What song do you sing at the top of your voice every time you hear it?
Right now it's Just Give Me A Reason by Pink. I love that song.

2. What’s your go-to movie?
Wow, there's so many movies. I would have to say whatever makes me cry.

3. What book are you currently reading?
I just finished Bitter Black Kiss by Michelle Clay, which was really awesome. And now I'm getting ready to start I, Emma Freke. So I'm going from adult to MG.

4. Where did you last go on holiday?
I went to my parents house on Easter. I was kind of upset I missed the egg hunt.

5. If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think it would be called?
Walking Disaster

6. What’s in your fridge right now?
Apples, milk, butter, grapes, eggs, juice, the ears of a chocolate bunny, lettuce, hot dogs, chocolate pudding, carrots, and tomatoes.

7. Whats your favourite take away food?
Chinese.

Wait for You ARC review

Wait for You (Wait for You, #1)Wait for You by J. Lynn

Synopsis

Some things are worth waiting for…

Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…

Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…

But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars.

I have literally just finished reading this and my brain is still swimming from its awesomeness. I know this is a little clichéd but this book had me hooked from just the first few pages. Avery is a very likeable character and although we dont get details as to what exactly happened to her but we get enough to understand why she reacts certain ways. As she gets closer to Cam I kept expecting her to let him know what happened, for him to magically wipe away all the hurt and anger, for their relationship to be this perfect 'he loves me so everything is fine with the world' but that's not what happens. what happens is so truthfully honest that it had me in tears. Time after time Avery pushes Cam away, convinced that her past will prevent her from having a happy ever after, or even a happy for now. Her past chews up their relationship and spits  it back at them. She has to fight every step of the way for their relationship. And that's what makes this so enjoyable, not her misery but the fact that it  feels so damn real. I lost count of how many times I wanted to reach inside the book and shake Avery, shout at her that Cam doesn't see things like that, to hug her and tell her that its Ok and that it's not her fault.

This story and the relationship between Avery and Cam unfolded slowly. At a great pace. Nothing was rushed, which ultimately is what makes this book so awesome. This is the first time I have read anything by Lynn/Armentrout but if her other books are this well written it's safe to say that it wont be my last.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harper Collins for the eARC. This is definitely a book I need on my paperback shelf.

8709527Bloodlines by Richelle Mead

Book Synopsis

Blood doesn't lie...

Sydney is an alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of human and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives. When Sydney is torn from her bed in the middle of the night, at first she thinks she's still being punished for her complicated alliance with dhampir Rose Hathaway. But what unfolds is far worse. Jill Dragomir - the sister of Moroi Queen Lissa Dragomir - is in mortal danger, and the Moroi must send her into hiding. To avoid a civil war, Sydney is called upon to act as Jill's guardian and protector, posing as her roommate in the last place anyone would think to look for vampire royalty - a human boarding school in Palm Springs, California. But instead of finding safety at Amberwood Prep, Sydney discovers the drama is only just beginning...

Claire's Review 4 of 5 Stars

After reading the vampire academy series I was really looking forward to reading this spin off. Unfortunately I was disappointed!

I didn't find bloodlines lived up to the VA series. Jill for me is not a great character, despite the fact that she is young, she is very childish and selfish in my eyes.

This series did however improve Adrian's character for me, and I am looking forward to seeing more of him in the rest of the series.

For me this book lacked any real heroine, and missed the presence of Rose. Sydney as the main character just didn't live up to Roses shadow, and also lacked any real romance as Jill's romantic endeavors were nothing compared to Rose and Dimitri in the VA series.

As usual though the book was well written and I am looking forward to seeing the characters evolve in the rest of the series.

John Manning Interview

Hello John welcome to Booky Ramblings, thank you for joining us today.

Author Bio.
johnmanningJohn L. Manning Jr. has self-published three books through Authorhouse.com that haven’t been getting the attention that they deserve.  The first book was about a future on Mars in the not to distance future.
The first book was published Dec. 14, 2006 these three “New Mars” books were published by the same publisher.  I used different Self Publishers to publish, “The Night Watchman” and “Paradise Island” trying to find the attention they deserve.
I was born in Philadelphia, but I grew up outside of the city.  I would imagine that I had a good childhood until my mother died when I was ten and I was hit by a car when I was twelve and suffered brain damage.  Now the brain damage just affected my fine motor controls, so I am all there in the head.  I have graduated college with an associate’s degree in computer sciences.
I have had a particular view to life that has help me see the world in a different perspective than most and that helped me write, “Changing the Little Things”

What inspired you to write your first book? I was trying to keep my mind active after getting a redundant job.

Do you have a specific writing style? Not really. I let the story grow as I write it.

How did you come up with the title? The title comes to me half way through writing the story, usually.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? In most of my books I hope the reader finds a part of the story that makes them think about what they would do in the situations.

How much of the book is realistic? I try to keep most of my story with in the realm of possibility, so the reader can better connect to the story.

Are your novels based on someone you know, or events in your own life? I build most stories around experiences in my life and then they grow in my imagination.

Which of your novels have influenced your life the most? My bestselling book, no, the research I had to do for Changing the Little Things changed how I saw myself and my life.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? I don’t even like a copilot at the gym. No, writing is for me. More education of the English language is needed for any author.

What book are you reading now? “Witch & Wizard” The Fire, by James Paterson;  After starting this trilogy I thought that I should try writing a book in the first person narrative.

What are your current projects? I am working on the right way to market my books. I am also deciding what idea, for my next book, will best sell in this time and day.

Do you see your writing as a career? Only after someone writes a book that has regular sales does writing become a career. Till then writing books is just a part-time job.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book? Yes, I would add another 200 pages.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated? Story telling always impressed me. Sharing a story of my own and affecting a strangers life makes me feel like I’ve accomplished something.

Can you share a little of your current work with us? The book that is being edited now is about how the United States welcomes higher evolved Aliens from another galaxy.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? Keeping at it. There are too many distractions in the world today.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? Not for what I have written so far. I am thinking of taking a vacation and writing about the location, then adding a stranger that disrupt the vacation or strange events accruing around a vacationer.

Who designed the covers? I have a digital imaging degree, so I have designed the framework of my covers.

What was the hardest part of writing your book? The grammar and spelling. I was never good at spelling and grammar never mattered as much as it does now.

Do you have any advice for other writers? Keep writing. Bestselling authors don’t start out that way.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Finish the book it may change the way you think.

The Testing Review

testing

The Testing by Joelle Charbonneau

Book Synopsis

Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Isn’t that what they say? But how close is too close when they may be one in the same?

The Seven Stages War left much of the planet a charred wasteland. The future belongs to the next generation’s chosen few who must rebuild it.  But to enter this elite group, candidates must first pass The Testing—their one chance at a college education and a rewarding career.

Cia Vale is honored to be chosen as a Testing candidate; eager to prove her worthiness as a University student and future leader of the United Commonwealth. But on the eve of her departure, her father’s advice hints at a darker side to her upcoming studies--trust no one.

But surely she can trust Tomas, her handsome childhood friend who offers an alliance? Tomas, who seems to care more about her with the passing of every grueling (and deadly) day of the Testing.    To survive, Cia must choose:  love without truth or life without trust.

Lisa's Review - 4.5 out of 5 stars

Before starting this book, I took a peek at some other reviews, and the ones I saw said how similar this was to The Hunger Games. For the first few chapters I then found myself comparing, but after that I forgot about it and The Testing came into its own. Yes, there are similarities - the struggle to survive in a world that was destroyed by war, the hunger, the devastation, trying to make it in a world less than perfect. But then it becomes more.

The main character, 17-year-old Cia, is desperate to become a Testing candidate. Passing the Testing means she can go on to the University. But after Graduating, Cia, and 3 of her other fellow graduates soon begin to realise the Testing is not as straightforward as it seems.

I soon became to love Cia, and desperately wanted her to survive through all the horrific stages of the Testing. When she left home, her father warns her to trust no-one, but during her journey, we see that Cia's downfall is being too trusting, and I could only hope that as I turned the pages, she wasn't let down by the people that she befriends, especially her love interest, Tomas.

I loved the way the book was written, the detailing into their surroundings, the way the back story of how the Seven Stages War ravaged the country, the development of the characters as the story progressed, and the fact that some of the twists and turns were so unexpected.

Putting down this book once I started was a struggle, I found myself wondering what was going to happen next whenever I wasn't reading. In fact I actually cried out loud when I read the last words, I didn't want the story to end and I was sad to get to the end. I am now going to spend the next few months desperately waiting for the next book to come in this series! I will admit to not knowing of  Joelle Charbonneau before reading the book, but before finishing The Testing I had scoped out some of her other books and I can't wait to read more of her work.

Book Synopsis:

A new adult romance novel by New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author H.M. Ward

Life sucks. And, as soon as Sidney picks up the pieces something always knocks her back onto her butt. It's never pretty, but this time is different. This time pretty isn't even the right word.

Peter is the personification of perfection. It's like he fell off his angel perch in purgatory, because let's face it--any guy that hot has got to be naughty. He was probably sent here to ruin her life.

Peter is beyond beautiful with his sexy blue eyes, dark hair, and toned body. Add in his charming wit and Peter is everything Sidney ever wanted in a man, but when things get hot and heavy Peter shows her the door. Sidney takes the walk of shame and leaves. It's the end of the worst blind date ever. Her life couldn't possibly reach higher levels of suckage, but it does.

The next morning everything comes crashing down. The insanely hot guy from last night, the one that saw her half naked, is teaching at the front of the class room.

Genre:  New Adult Romance Novel, approx. 325 pages

Excerpts:

#1:

Uncertainty lines Peter’s gaze. “I can’t do this anymore. Every time I see you, it’s like I’ve had my heart ripped out of my chest. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. It’s not a crush. It was never a crush. I love you. I took too long to say it. I took too long to fix this, but I choose you.”

#2:

Last time she tried to set me up, I ended up on a date with a twitchy klepto. Let’s just say things didn’t go well. He picked up everything, except the check.  The time before that was equally horrifying. I missed some verbal cue and the guy ended the night with a face full of pepper spray.

#3.

I stand there for a moment, not knowing if I’ve been stood up, when I feel the hairs on my neck prickle. Someone is looking at me. I feel the gaze on the back of my neck. I turn slowly and scan the room. A set of eyes, as blue as gemstones, gleam back at me. My stomach flutters. Oh, holy hell, he’s hot. I walk slowly towards his table, my heart banging against my ribs.

Naughty Girl blog tour

Naughty Girl Final

naughty girl
Alexandra loved the hot sex she experienced as a submissive in the bedroom, but would never give her heart to any man.

After getting hurt by his sub and wife, Paul swore he would never make that kind of commitment to a woman again.

They meet at the club that Alex frequents and quickly become play partners. The sex is amazing, but despite their reservations, they begin to fall for each other. Will they be willing to admit their feelings for each other?

Excerpt #

I hated to admit it to myself, but I was looking forward to going to the engagement party with Alex. We hadn’t hung out anywhere except the club, so I couldn’t wait spend time with her in another social setting. In a way, this was a big step for us, almost like our first date.

Alex had been busy all week, helping Stephanie get ready for the party since she was the maid of honor and her best friend. We didn’t get a chance to see much of each other and it surprised me how much I missed her.

The party was being held at a bar down the street from the club and we decided I would meet her at the party since she had to be there early to help set up. I would then take her home after.

I was a little nervous about tonight. I had no problem being with Alex at the club, but for some reason being out in public with her had my stomach tied in knots. The last time I was this scared to be out with a girl, I was in high school. I wasn’t sure if I liked what she was doing to me.

I arrived at the party and quickly scanned the crowd for Alex. I heard laughter coming from the corner and I smiled. I knew that sound anywhere. I headed in the direction of her voice and finally spotted her. I stopped for a minute and to look at her. She looked amazing in her green knee-length sundress that brought out the gold flecks in her eyes and white strappy sandals. Her was hair down just the way I liked it with a couple of pieces pinned back. It was in that moment I realized I was in love with her.

She caught me looking at her and she smiled questioningly at me as she walked over. She hooked her arm in mine. “Hey you.” I took a deep breath. I had to get myself together.

“Hi yourself. You look gorgeous tonight.” I finally managed to say.

She blushed. Could she be just as nervous as I was? “Thank you.”

She turned her face and kissed me softly on the cheek. I knew for certain in that moment our relationship had changed. I didn’t want her just as a play partner at the club, I wanted to make her mine.

“Let’s get you a drink,” she said with a smile.

The rest of the night was better than I ever imagined it would be. We laughed and danced all night, just like a real couple. The later it got, the more I realized that I had fallen for this blond-haired beauty. . This wasn't just about collaring her, I wanted her to be mine in every sense of the word. I thought about bringing it up after the party, but I wasn’t sure how she felt about me and I didn’t want to ruin the night.

Around midnight, as she was sitting on my lap, she whispered in my ear, “Let’s go.”

I raised an eyebrow at her. “Where? Are you tired? Do you want to go home?”

She bit her lip and shook her head. “Not home...not my home anyway. And no, I’m not tired.”

“Want to come back to my place?” We’d never been to each other’s homes, so I wasn’t sure how she would react to my invitation.

She nodded and looked at me with her hazel eyes. “Yes, please.” I loved her eyes. They were so expressive. They gave her every emotion away. And right now they were saying ‘fuck me, please’.

I ran my hand down her back. “So polite...Good girl.” I helped her off my lap and stood up, offering my hand. “Ok, let’s go.”

Author interview

Hello Scarlett and welcome to Booky Ramblings, thank you for taking the time to do this interview.

First off tell us a little bit about yourself. I live in Wisconsin and have my whole life.  I have two girls that keep me busy and a husband and a full-time job.  I love 80’s music and am an avid reader myself.  We like to camp as a family and that’s a great time to get caught up on my reading.

What inspired you to write your first book? Honestly, I have been writing for years.  I mostly dabbled in short stories.  I never published and I never submitted anywhere.  Then I found out about self publishing and I loved the whole idea of it.  HB Heinzer actually was the one to finally push me to release my first book, Watching Her.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books? There’s so much more to just writing!  That’s the easy part.  Doing edits and self promotion and all that other stuff is such a big part of it.

How long does it take you to write a book? I like to write novellas because I have no patience, so I can pump out a story with 20k words in a week or so if I have no interrupted time, but what mom has that?  lol

Can you share a little of your current work in progress with us? I am working on edits for a story about a rock star and his long-lost high school love called I Remember You.

Describe your main character, in 5 words. Sassy, sexy, independent, fierce, submissive

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? It’s hard because I work full-time, so I steal time to write when I can.  Word sprints have been crucial to my writing.  I try to steal moments throughout the day, but sometimes the weekends if my husband is gone, I will get a ton done.  It’s amazing what I can do with even just one hour of uninterrupted time.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers? Thanks you for buying my books and I hope you love my characters as much as I do.

Which authors would you say inspired you to write? Mari Carr is a big one.  I love her.  I also love Em Petrova, Kristen Proby, and Madeline Sheehan.

Now we have some random questions for you if you have the extra time.

If someone wrote your biography, what do you think the title should be? “Her Liberation”

What book are you currently reading? I have a ton of books on my TBR pile but right now I’m reading Their Virgin’s Secret by Shayla Black and Lexi Blake

What is in your fridge right now? Not much.  We need to go to the store but there is always Mountain Dew (for my husband) and Diet Coke for me!

Favourite Ice Cream flavour? Chocolate chip

Cats or dogs? Cats but we do have two dogs.

Pet Peeves? People that call instead of text.  Stupid people.

And finally, since I’m a little obsessed with the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse, your house is under attack and you only have time to grab 3 things, what do you grab?Assuming it’s automatic my family is with me I grab my iPad, my Kindle, and some wine.  I can last for days with those things.

Siren Snow

17395442Siren Snow By Victoria Barrow

Book Synopsis

Winter is not exactly the 'season of the witch'. It's cold in Washington, and everything is covered in snow. But it doesn't bother Lucilla Sinclair, the fiery Witch-Warden for Washington state. She's perfectly happy performing minor enchantments at her little arcane shop in Redhaven, an old fishing town turned tourist attraction. Besides, her tall, dark-skinned elemental guardian Mishal keeps her warm at night. Her raven familiar, Irwin, helps her to pass the time in the otherwise sleepy town.

Magickal mischief in the cold, quiet state is slow for the most part, but when a freak winter storm lands a half-transformed Siren on her front porch, Lucy’s life becomes increasingly strange. Her dreams are suddenly assaulted with visions of a beautiful demon man, and her waking hours are spent warding off a cadre of mysterious shadow creatures.

With the life of the Siren in her hands, Lucy must trek through the snows of Canada in a race against time. Her mission: to find the one person with enough knowledge of forbidden black magick to fix the broken Siren Melusine before her seven days on land are up.

This is gonna be a rough week.

Claire's Review - 3 of 5 Stars

Before I read this book I read a few reviews and was excited to see what it was all about. However for me personally it book didn't live up to my expectations. Thats not to say it isn't a good book, it is well written and the author has an amazing imagination,  however some parts I felt belonged in a book aimed at a much younger audience.

I felt at times things were too descriptive, which for some may be a good thing but for me just made parts of the book slow and at times i really had to push myself to continue reading without skipping pages. I read a lot of this type of genre and I also found it very hard to get my head around the town knowing about mystical goings on whereas in most books this is kept secret from human knowledge.

Overall it wasn't a bad read, it was well written and a well thoughts out story line  With a few tweaks here and there I can see it becoming a very successful series and a good debut for an author.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Hollywood Strip Review

HS   Hollywood Strip by Shamron Moore

Book Synopsis

Callie Lambert is sexy, beautiful, ambitious—and undiscovered.
Callie knows exactly what she wants:  fame, fortune, and a fabulous career as a Hollywood actress.

Packing her bags, Callie leaves her mundane life in Michigan for Los Angeles, determined to be a star.  Her schedule is grueling: waitressing long hours to make ends meet and auditioning for anything and everything in the hopes that she'll land a big break.  After suffering what feels like thousands of heartbreaking rejections, she finally lands the lead in an unlikely hit movie, Nympho Cheerleaders Attack!, bringing her dry spell to an end.

The  film opens a new world of glamorous possibilities.  Coupled with a budding romance with Evan Marquardt, a sexy, chart-topping singer, Callie's on top of the world.  But she's  thrown for a loop when tragedy strikes, unleashing a string of events  she never in her wildest dreams anticipated.  She quickly discovers that success in Hollywood creates a feeding frenzy of money-hungry producers, two-faced friends, and privacy-robbing paparazzi.  It seems that life as an on-the-rise starlet is not as glamorous as she once imagined. . .

Dishing the dirt on the secret world of Hollywood’s nasty side, Hollywood Strip is a heartfelt story about ambition, empowerment, and what it means to make it in the City of Angels.

Lisa's Review - 2.5 out of 5 stars.

I wanted to read this book as the synopsis was screaming 'Jackie Collins - watch out!' and really hoped it was going to be as fabulous as it sounded. After finishing, I think Ms Collins' crown is safe - for now.

Hollywood Strip follows the life of Callie Lambert as she tries to rise to the top in Hollywood. The first problem with this book is how easy they make it seem for an unknown wannabe actress to suddenly get her break and rise up. There is no real struggle, and it makes the book seem unrealisitic. The story is ok, it could have been really good. It's juicy, it's ballsy, it s definately smutty and full of sex, scandal and swearing. The problem is the way it is written. There are points of the book where there is so much going on at once, that the main plots seem very rushed to fit in some of the smaller bits which only feel like 'fillers' to the story and some don't fit in. It would have been nice to see these smaller parts taken out, and used better with some of the main plots, so instead of rushing through them, they were written better, for example the story of Callie's best friend, who has a drug problem. As well as our main characters rise to fame, there are a few side story lines, which could have made this book brilliant, had the writing been less rushed.

Hollywood Strip  was an ok read, something I would have taken on holiday for some light reading at the beach, for example. With some fine tuning, this could have been a really good read, and with some more work on here writing style, Shamron Moore could be on her way to taking the crown from Jackie Collins and becoming Queen of the LA sexy!

Nicolas Wilson author interview

6553776Nicolas Wilson is a published journalist, graphic novel writer, and novelist. He lives in the rainy wastes of Portland, Oregon with his wife, two cats and a dog.

Nic writes a variety of genres, including science fiction, horror, speculative fiction, and political fiction.

Download copies of his debut novel, Whores from smashwords. or amazon. As a word of caution, Whores contains some graphic violent content. His second novel, Dag will be available April 22nd.
Hi Nic, Welcome to Booky Ramblings. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview.

You're very welcome. Interviews are fun, and it's nice to interact, as opposed to the one-way communication I'm used to having with an audience.

  1. First off tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm Nic Wilson. I've worked as a journalist, and have now been writing fairly seriously for something like eight years as a fiction writer. I finished the first draft of my eighth novel in February, the morning of my wedding.

  1. What inspired you to write your first book?

I'd been writing seriously for five years, a short story every week. So for me, it was just time. I started my weekly short story because I didn't want to just write- I wanted to write well, and I knew the only way to do that was to work on things until they were done and then publish them. So I did that, weekly. And Dag was just the natural evolution of that.

  1. Describe Dag, your main character, in 5 words.

Adorably whiny, awesomely sarcastic lady.

  1. What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

That kind of varies. I have a day job, for starters. And like I mentioned, I just finished my eighth novel in February, and a novella in March. I'm in various stages of polishing and drafting the others for publication. The plan is to continue to do more editing than writing until I've got the number of unpublished projects whittled down to two or three. I've got four full novels tentatively scheduled for this year, plus a collection of my journalism and several short story collections, too. So right now I'm editing heavy. But because of the day job, my writing/editing schedule is to usually wake up sometime between 3 and 5 am, get as much done as I can, go do the day job, come home around five and work on it more until bed time. It's pretty brutal, but I absolutely love the work- including this aspect of it- so it's worth it.

  1. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

I love readers. Especially my readers. So specifically: thank you. I know your time is precious, and you've got a lot of options out there. But by choosing to read my stuff, you're actively making my dreams come true, a buck or two at a time.

  1. Which authors would you say inspired you to write?

I'm not sure. I know a lot of authors have inspired me stylistically, or philosophically. So maybe I'll go with that. I think Hunter S. Thompson, by way of Warren Ellis, taught me that writing can have a point- maybe even that it should have a point, and a gooey moral center. Sure, the outside should be enjoyable and chocolatey- but you've got to have some nutritious nougat at the center, too.

  1. What books did you read as a child?

Poe. Seriously. I loved Poe as a little kid. There was just something so deliciously sadistic, especially in The Pit and the Pendulum. But it felt like it had a moral center, too- like it was a Bible story for a more modern era. Lots of normal kids stuff, too. Seuss, Berenstein bears. And one of my fondest literary memories is of my dad reading my the Hobbit. And doing voices.
Here are some random questions for you now.

  1. If someone wrote your biography, what do you think the title should be?

I have a tendency towards self-deprecation, which usually spars with my ego for the spotlight. I know when I interviewed Adam West he called me “quiet and diabolical,” so I think I'd be inclined to go with that.

  1. What book are you currently reading?

I'm sort of in the middle of Tad Williams' Memory of Sorrow and Thorn trilogy, specifically the first book, called The Dragonbone Chair. I've got an idea for a fantasy saga, and my wife insists I finish the series before I start in on it. Well, that and I have to finish this year's slate of books, too.

  1. Favourite Ice Cream flavour?

You're going to make me choose? Actually, that may not be that hard. I love the rainbow of flavors, and in particular ice creams with other desserts in them, but for some reason,  right this second, I'm craving chocolate ice cream with Oreos in it. Mmm.

  1. Cats or dogs?

Cats, generally. Dogs are too needy- and I'm just emotionally detached enough that I know I neglect them- but emotionally attached enough to then feel bad for it. Of course, I've got a dog, right now, that came along with the wife... and he's just the sweetest thing, and I can't imagine our house without a dog in it, along with our cats. So maybe both.

  1. And finally, since I’m a little obsessed with the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse, your house is under attack and you only have time to grab 3 things, what do you grab?

It might tickle you to know (and be cheating) that I actually have a zombie survival kit assembled that I could grab. A filmmaker friend of mine asked me to star in a short movie (one that was sadly never finished), and actually asked me to star, and to gather up the gear I would want to try to survive with. It's still put together because for the longest time we planned on finishing the shoot. But because I don't want to cheat, I'll say this: best weapon possible is a crowbar, hands down. In the event of the zombie apocalypse, you're going to want a sturdy weapon (no wood) that won't get dull or stuck in a corpse (no knives, axes, etc.). Plus, a crowbar would allow you to easily break into abandoned houses for a safe place to stay the night/to raid for more resources. Secondly, I'd want a combination tool, with a knife, can-opener, maybe even a spork, those kinds of basics, because there's going to be lots of things you're going to have to improvise on the go. And finally, a decent sack to carry your hard-won cans of food in. From there, you'd mostly want to keep your head down, and to stay in the suburbs as much as possible. There would be decent foraging opportunities there, without the strong likelihood of being overwhelmed you'd have in the city, or the strong likelihood of getting shot you'd have in more rural areas.

Wow! You have certainly given it much thought. Is it wrong that I haven't given my choices any thought? I guess I shall need to get thinking, I cant just hope that I run into my very own Daryl Dixon.

Beg for Mercy

Beg for Mercy (Cambion, #1)Beg for Mercy by Shannon Dermott

Book Synopsis

Everyone dreams of that first kiss. Of that magic moment when your lips finally meet those of that special person you’ve waited your whole life for. A little awkward, a little scary, a little hot and every bit amazing. We speculate that the whole world will shake and time will just stop. No one, however, ever imagines that kiss to bring Death himself knocking.

Sixteen year old Mercy Moore's life just got more complicated. The kiss that originally could have meant she would finally have a boyfriend now was the kiss that could have very nearly ended his life. A small detail her mother conveniently never told her will take her life for an abrupt u-turn. Dating, no love, was now completely and utterly impossible. And the boy well, that boy would never be the same.

But life, however cruel, goes on. Far too soon for her taste, Mercy finds herself at a senior party with the elite students of her school and her best friend. And of all things, playing a stupid game that could very well mean the death of someone in that small room. If it were not for her best friend, the hottest guys in school, and a small need to fit in, she may have been able to escape the disaster that was to come. Her worst nightmare, her personal curse, her very life, only gets dangerously worse.

Shona's review 5 of 5 stars.

When I agreed to read and review this for author Shannon Dermott I figured I would enjoy it, I mean I read the synopsis and I was like "yeah, this is a book I want to read." What I wasn't expecting was a book that I couldn't put down. Do not read this if you are surrounding by small people who rely on you to cook and care for them because one of two things will happen, either your small people will eat all the fruit because you haven't made lunch or dinner yet or you will be incredibly frustrated that you can't finish reading that chapter just yet. Yes both things happened to me, when there was no fruit left to tide them over til the end of 'just one more chapter' I had no choice but to step away and cook for them. This book had me up late at night reading until I physically couldn't keep my eyes open any longer, and then it had me up mega early so that I could carry on reading.

This isn't my first Succubus book, but it is the first time I have read a book about a teenage succubus and I think Dermott has struck gold. The PNR genre is literally riddled with vampire romance books, so to come across Beg for Mercy is like a breath of fresh air. There are several relationship arcs in this book and I think Dermott has worked them perfectly. Mercy is by no means a slut, but she really does have a hard time keeping her lust in check but when you're an untrained succubus that's par for the course. Right? Exactly, especially when you have several hot guys thrusting themselves upon you, guys who are fully aware of your nature and inability to control it.

I enjoyed this so much that when I finished the last page in the story and turned the page I actually squealed with delight to realise this is just the first book in the series. So now I'm really looking forward to reading the next instalment  Waiting for Mercy.

Normal by Day

normal by dayNormal by Day by S Ritter

Book Synopsis:
I'm rather leery in the night
Of things that hide from the light
I try to keep those things at bay
Till they become Normal By Day

Normal By Day is a gripping, suspenseful and frightening novel about a seemingly normal guy. His dark side is an entirely different story, and is revealed as his evil acts strain his life and relationships. Join Steve Striker as he becomes an enforcer for the Chicago mob, battling his desire to please both sides of his complicated life.

Shona's review 2 of 5 stars

This was a relatively short book, just 159 pages but it has taken  me 4 days to read it. I would love to say that life has gotten in the way and that really I have been too busy with the children or housework to really dedicate any time to reading. But the truth is Steve Striker didn't appeal to me. There was nothing about his story that really pulled at me and made me want to find out more about him. I really didn't care about the man.

The story is told from Steve's point of view but he is reminiscing on his life so far. The beginning was confusing, I got lost in just the first chapter and had to re-read to fully understand. Honestly the book could do without the entire first chapter, it's just not needed.

Steve remembers when he first started his life of crime at thirteen, then suddenly he's 19 and getting married, then it's almost thirteen years later, his marriage is almost over and we get out first real glimpse of Steve's dark side. Again it jumps and suddenly Steve is in his 50's and being contacted by the Chicago mob because they liked the way he worked. In all this time we really don't get to see a lot of Steve, we don't get a chance to connect with him on a personal level and it was this factor that made reading the book difficult for me. I don't care if the protagonist of your story is a good guy or a bad guy, I want them to have personality. Give me a reason to love or hate them.

I enjoyed reading about Steve's jobs, I liked the fact that when it came to taking someone else's life he wasn't just a hollow shell, I liked that it had an adverse effect on him it made him more human . If Ritter can build on this in the next book in the series I think reading about Steve Striker would be more enjoyable.

I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.

JusAccardoJus Accardo spent her childhood reading and learning to cook. Determined to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps as a chef, she applied and was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America. At the last minute, she realized her path lay with fiction, not food, and passed on the spot to pursue writing.

Jus is the bestselling author of YA paranormal romance and urban fantasy fiction.

A native New Yorker, she lives in the middle of nowhere with her husband, three dogs, and sometimes guard bear, Oswald. Her first book, Touch was released in November 2011 from Entangled Publishing. She is currently working on the next book in the Denazen series.

Hi Jus, welcome to Booky Ramblings, thank you for taking the time to do this interview.

Thanks for letting me hang out for awhile!

First off tell us a little bit about yourself.

Hmm... Short and sweet...

Likes: writing, reading, coffee, World of Warcraft, cheese, dogs, and the outdoors.

Dislikes: Asparagus, flavoured coffee, airplanes, the word auntie, spiders, and the color yellow.

What inspired you to write your first book?

When I was a kid, I started rewriting the ends of books when I didn’t like the way they ended. At twelve, I was like, huh, I should try this from the beginning, and I did. I wanted to read a story about a dog and a horse—so I wrote one. I actually still have it, though it will never see the light of day. My husband has made it his life’s goal to find it. Muhahaha. He’ll never find it. ;D

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

How much work actually goes into getting a book out into the world. The author writes the book, but that’s just the beginning. So many people are involved in the process from start to finish. It really does take a village...

How long does it take you to write a book?

It’s different each time. TOUCH took less than a month to write, while TOXIC took three. There are so many factors. The individual story, time of year (I’m easily distracted in the summer and fall :D ), and lately, other projects. Like right now for example I’m working on two different books.

Can you share a little of your current work in progress with us?

Hmm. My editor will kill me if I say too much ;) I can tell you it’s called RUINED and it’s a NA that’s kind of dark and that I’m totally and madly in love with the characters.

Describe Brandt Cross, in 5 words.

Loyal, sweet, determined, funny, and passionate.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

I usually sit down at the computer between 5 and 6 a.m. (with coffee, of course) then work till about eleven. I take a couple hours, run errands, and then work till about eight or nine. It sounds insane, but it’s really not bad because I LOVE my job.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?

Thank you. An infinity of thank you. You guys make doing what I do worthwhile.

Which authors would you say inspired you to write?

There are so many, but I think the main ones are Mary Stanton and Rob Thurman. Kind of opposite ends of the spectrum, huh?

Now we have some random questions for you if you have the extra time.

If someone wrote your biography, what do you think the title should be?

A day in the life of a caffeine addict

What book are you currently reading?

Slashback by Rob Thurman

What is in your fridge right now?

Um, not much. Poor thing is starving right now. There’s cream for coffee, and I think there might be some cheese. I’m not sure how long it’s been there. It’d old though. Like, it could walk out the door on its own, kind of old...

Favourite Ice Cream flavour?

Chocolate/vanilla swirl

Cats or dogs?

Dogs!

Pet Peeves?

Coffee grinds!

And finally, since I’m a little obsessed with the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse, your house is under attack and you only have time to grab 3 things, what do you grab?

Hmm... Well I’d say my computer, but the world is probably going to spiral into chaos so there won’t be any internet. I think I’d have to go with my emergency bag (packed, of course, in anticipation of said apocalypse) my dogs, and my lucky stuffed llama, Floyd.

The LightRider Journals by Eric Nierstedt

ecw-ons2006_ifcenawinsweriot - CopySynopsis:

Joseph Hashimoto is happy with his ordinary life. A man who believes in fairness and just action, Joe’s greatest love is his family. But as he moves about his days, he is completely unaware that his actions are carefully observed. With one momentous decision, Joe’s ordinary life is about to transform into an extraordinary existence.

While attempting to save a little girl from danger, Joe is killed in a violent explosion. Instead of dying, however, his soul is brought before the elemental Architects of the Universe, who tell him he has been chosen for a sacred duty. Reborn as Lightrider, the earthly representative of Light, Joe is given leadership of the Elemental Knights, a group of half-man, half-animal beings. Charged with maintaining a delicate balance between good and evil, Joe must police both sides and destroy anyone who threatens to ruin it. As Joe struggles with his conflicting emotions and longing for home, he must face his greatest threat—the ancient Chaos Demons.

In this fantasy tale, a man inadvertently thrust into a world of cosmic forces must come to terms with change and accept what needs to be done for the good of all.

Excerpt.

“Don’t forget the milk today,” Jeri Hashimoto said.

Huh?” Joe asked.

“Don’t forget the milk,” Jeri repeated as she poured herself a cup of the black, herbal sludge that somehow worked like coffee. “Like you did yesterday.”

“Yes dear,” Joe Hashimoto muttered. He hated to make mistakes like that. Jeri always said that it was because he was Japanese; she often hid the knives when Joe forgot or failed to do something and then made him promise not to “go kamikaze”.

Luckily, she’d forgotten this morning. Joe finished buttering his toast. Still, sometimes Joe wondered if he should add a scar or two, if only to accent his bland features—short black hair; slanted, dark Asian eyes in a slightly rounded face; moderately fit physique; average height. His plainness had made him work hard to get people to recognize him for his skills, although being able to one-up his wife wasn’t always one of them.

“Come on, you deserved it a little,” Jeri said with a laugh as she brushed back her hair.

“Believe me, dear, seeing that disappointed look on your face is motivation enough.”

“Aww, look at the little suck-up,” Jeri replied. She leaned forward and kissed Joe on the cheek.

“Well, that is why you married me, isn’t it?” Joe asked.

“Sure wasn’t the sex,” Jeri said, sipping her tea.

Joe just shook his head and began to butter his second piece of toast. As Jeri picked up the paper and started to read, he took a look at her face. Even though Jeri wasn’t wearing much makeup, Joe still thought he’d married the most eyes-popping-out-and-leaking-into-your-lap stunning woman in the world. Her red hair framed her face and still looked as fiery as ever after all the years. Still, Joe was always drawn to her eyes above all else. They were a deep shade of green, almost the color of the rain forest in the pictures Joe had seen.

That was why he waited until Jeri finished her paper before he turned her face against him. “I almost forgot; Mom called last night.”

“Oh …” Jeri said in horror-laced surprise. “Joe, please don’t tell me … not after the last time. Don’t tell me they’re …”

“Yeah. On Thursday.”

“Oh God, and you said yes?”

“I know, I know, but I think she’s coming around.”

“Dear, she will never forgive me for being your wife and a cracker. All I ever hear is, ‘in Japan we do this’ and ‘this is how we did it when I grew up.’ She spent the last visit giving me ‘suggestions’ on how to decorate the house, how to cook our food, and even how I should defend a case!” she snapped.

Joe tried to hide a smirk. “I don’t disagree with you. But Mom was never happy about having to leave home when my dad got transferred—”

“And she wanted to make sure you didn’t forget your culture.” Jeri sighed. “She barely even accepted giving you an American name. But it’s been years since all that, and I’m always going to be the ignorant cracker-Mick to her until one of us dies.”

“I know. Even my father is tired of hearing it. But she’s my mother, and I don’t want to become estranged from her. Your dad and I didn’t hit it off either, but he and I worked it out. Doesn’t that prove that maybe we can get Mom to accept you?”

Jeri was quiet then. Finally, she asked, “When are they coming over?”

“They aren’t yet,” Joe said. “I said I’d have to clear it with you first. Oh, you thought I just went ahead and booked it, didn’t you?”

“I hate you,” Jeri muttered.

“I know. But what was I gonna do? Let her come by unannounced and have you even angrier with me?”

Jeri gritted her teeth, then said, “Thank you. I’ll try to make it work then. But I’m not making any promises if she goes off the deep end.”

“Good. Now, they were talking about taking us to dinner on Thursday. Is that okay with you?”

“All right. But if she goes nuts, you owe me big-time.”

“I promise, if anything happens, I will be your slave.”

“We’re married, Joe. You already are.”

“Dad’s already what?” another voice said.

Both Jeri and Joe turned to see their twelve-year-old son standing in the doorway, his backpack slung over his shoulder. Cody Hashimoto had the open look on his face his father used so well. But physically, he was his mother’s child, with light skin, blue eyes, and an oblong face. Only Joe’s jet-black hair had managed to establish itself, along with a slightly Asian slant to Cody’s eyes.

“Nothing important,” Jeri said. “You ready for school?”

“Yes, Mom,” Cody said with a sigh.

“You have your books?”

“Mom, come on. One day I forget my books, and you don’t let it go for a year!”

“You can ask complain later; you have to catch the bus in five minutes—which is all the time I have,” Joe said, looking at the clock. Grabbing his coat from the nearby rack, Joe threw it on, put some of his toast in his coat pocket, and headed for the door.

“See you guys tonight,” he said as he worked the doorknob.

“Later, Dad,” Cody said as he headed for the front door as well.

“Have a good day,” Jeri added, moving to grab her briefcase from the countertop.

“He seems rather … quiet, don’t you think?”

“Perhaps, but he does show promise. He knows how to negotiate.”

“One argument solved is not enough. Yours is the final piece, and we cannot wait forever to determine whether or not he is acceptable.”

“Give him time, sister. I was led to this man by the One, and we both know such things do not happen without a reason.”

“Just make sure you do not misunderstand the message. I agree that this man seems to have the moral qualities we seek. But is he a leader? If he cannot end the conflict between his wife and mother, how can he face the challenges we have for him?

How can he lead anyone when he cannot lead himself?”

“Wait and see. I believe that our answer will be delivered.”

100_1875-1Author bio:

Eric Nierstedt grew up in Garwood NJ, and spent most of his life absorbing the epic tales of fantasy from Terry Brooks, Stephen King, and even the tales of comic books and video games. His writing began soon after, as he honed it through writing for the local paper, and maintaining his own blog (www.thepopculturemark.wordpress.com/). When he graduated from Kean University, his began his first novel, while also being selected for the NJ Wordsmith competition. Eric wanted to tell a story of a group of characters, anchored by one central narrator, that battled forces of destruction. And he also wanted to use his own thoughts on the nature of good and evil- how the two are defined by each other,

"When I started the Lightrider Journals, the big fantasy novels of the day were Twilight and Harry Potter.  I wanted to avoid being another copy of those at all costs.  So I combined all my major influences: Terry Brooks, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Stephen King's The Dark Tower.  As I wrote, I wanted to explore a concept that wasn't discussed much in any popular fantasy- the idea of showing good and evil as forces both responsible for and essential to life as we know it. I also wanted to show a more natural form of magic, and show fantasy existing in the real world, which would turn out much bigger then people think.  And finally, I wanted to tell a story about what I was feeling stepping out in the world for the first time- how a man can adapt to a sudden and tremendous responsibility -not just his successes, but his losses as well, and how he learns to live with them.  And of course, throw in liberal amounts of magic, characters that would resonate with people, and a sprinkling of humor.  I think anyone who reads it will be able to have a good time with all the characters and action, but also see a different version of the never-ending battle of good and evil.  And most of all, I hope they leave the book with a better idea of how they can face that which seems insurmountable."

Here's what Eric had to say about writing.

If you want to write, there are many different options open to you.  You can sit and write for six hours a day.  You can pick a subject, do as much research as you deem necessary, and then write a meticulous outline detailing everything your story needs to get done.  You can have an idea and just write.  Or if you really want, you can live in a one room cabin in the woods and do nothing but write, eat, sleep, and do your business.  Granted that last is a bit extreme, but it has been done and it might work for you.

For me, I can honestly say that I have taken a little bit of each approach in my writing (minus the cabin).  I have never believed in writing a full outline, or writing something where I needed to do heavy research.  I feel that takes the fun out of the process, so I tend to write about a subject I’m familiar with, or that I would enjoy researching.  As for my outline, I really don’t make one.  If I have an idea, I hold onto it and mull on it for some time.  Ideas then start to drift in about the story- the conflict, the major events, and the characters.  Eventually, I have enough pieced together to form a loose story thread.  It’s at the point I actually sit down at the computer and start to type.

This part is probably the trickiest one to do.  At this point, I know how the story starts and ends, but not how the two are connected.  So I have to start thinking of ways to connect the two, which means that the small details don’t really start to form until I start the process.  For some, this sounds daunting and a process that leaves too much to chance.  But for me, it also the right amount of looseness to the process.  With a fully developed outline, I would feel that everything had already been thought out, and I was just copying down information.  But by having the process open, it feels like a more creative process.  I learn things about my world and my characters as I write.  For example, in writing Lightrider, I initially wrote the character of Sandshifter as an angry, combative person.  But as I wrote the story, I started to understand why- she was alone in a strange world, with a form and powers she didn’t understand, and forced to serve something she initially didn’t believe in.  It was a lot for anyone to take in, and it helped me to humanize her character.  Parts of the story also evolved that way- the section in which Joe Hashimoto, my main character, is trained in using his powers, came from first realizing he needed the training, and then thinking of all the ways his  power (light) could be utilized.  It gave the scene the sense of discovery I wanted readers to feel when they saw just what Joe was capable of.  And finally, I did set a goal for myself each time I sat down- no matter what the scene was, no matter how long, I had to finish it.

As I said, everyone has a different approach, and while mine is more of a hodgepodge, it’s certainly not the only way to do things.  But I say to anyone that asks me, try it.  Even if it doesn’t work for you, it will bring you one step closer to what does, and you may even find parts of it that do work.  And if all else fails, the cabin is always waiting.
